Has anyone noticed a correlation between their body acidic levels and vision problems?

I'm looking for people who have acid reflux and heart burn on a regular basis. Do you notice pain in your eyes and loss of clarity in vision?

My diet consists of jalapenos, chipotle, black pepper, crushed red pepper, giardiniera, of course tomato sauce, and hot sauce. I just love hot and spicy food >.<

I notice when I wake up, my vision is usually 20/20 for the first 30 minutes before it starts becoming painful just "to see"
I've seen an eye doctor and they repeatedly tell me there is nothing wrong.

My eyes constantly hurt. When I close my eyes, I can instantly feel the pain go away, but when I open my eyes it starts hurting where it left off.

My bloodpressure is ok, blood sugar is ok, and the EKG and Catscan told me everything else looked fine.

So I sat back and looked at my diet and I noticed that I eat spicy and acidic foods more than I should and noticed I was getting bad heartburn in the middle of the night.

I started drinking LOTS of water thinking it would neutralize the pH of my stomach. This was a big fail and made things worse because the water itself was acidic.

So finally after months I came up with the solution to drink water with half of a squeezed LEMON in it, 3 times a day, for a week and have noticed that I don't have any problems with my vision anymore.

When I stop drinking water with lemon after my vision is repaired, the problem returns in about a week.

So I am drinking water with lemon again and it seems to be helping my vision again.

In conclusion, you should all keep an eye on Body Acidity for unexplained health problems. I heard cancer is also a disease stemming from high acidity. It only makes sense that there are so many cases of cancer since 97% of the foods we eat other than fresh fruit are acidic, including our drinking water.

^^Yes, but what you don't realize is that although lemon juice is acidic in nature, it creates a paradoxical reaction in the stomach, stimulating the release of bicarbonate in the pancreas and neutralizing acids

The pancreas secretes into the small intestine, not the stomach.

What's so special about lemon juice, as opposed to other acidic foods or stomach fluids?

That didn't answer my question, and, in fact, looks suspiciously like a troll response.

In terms of acidity lemon > water

So you're saying that if you ingest something acidic, your body will secrete something basic in an attempt to neutralize it?

How revolutionary! Please, tell me more.

What the OP is talking about is basically an alternative medicine approach that amounts to a bunch of BS. The approach is called an "alkaline diet." It's pretty much a bunch of crap.

I have true acidosis. My kidneys do not properly filter the acid from my blood so my blood remains acidic and my urine pH is very alkaline. A high blood pH causes calcium to be pulled from my bones and excreted in my urine. Along with the pH of my urine, this creates an ideal environment for the formation of calcium phosphate kidney stones and urinary tract infections. You can actually find clues about your body's pH from a simple blood test. My kidney doctor keeps an eye on my bicarbonate levels because it is an indicator of pH. I see no correlation between these results and really any thing at all. No vision problems, no heartburn, no reflux, nada nothing. And from a medical standpoint, I really shouldn't notice anything except a long term thinning of the bones and kidney function.

You aren't really going to make any significant changes to your body's pH by dietary means. There is no scientific evidence that an alkaline diet or trying to impact body acidity through dietary means does anything that it claims or that the OP claims. And the American Institute for Cancer Research comes down pretty hard on the cancer myth that the OP mentions.

Quote :
"The unsubstantiated theory is based on lab studies that suggest cancer cells thrive in an acidic (low pH) environment, but cannot survive in alkaline (high pH) surroundings. While these findings are accurate, they apply only to cells in an isolated lab setting. Altering the cell environment of the human body to create a less-acidic, less-cancer-friendly environment is virtually impossible.

While proponents of this myth argue that avoiding certain foods and eating others can change the body’s pH level, these claims stand in stark contrast to everything we know about the chemistry of the human body. Acid-base balance is tightly regulated by several mechanisms, among them kidney and respiratory functions. Even slight changes to your body’s pH are life-threatening events. Patients with kidney disease and pulmonary dysfunction, for example, often rely on dialysis machines and mechanical ventilators (respectively) to avoid even small disruption of acid-base balance.

Lastly, home “test kits,” which measure the pH of urine, do not relay information about the body’s pH level. True, foods, drinks and supplements will affect the acidity or alkalinity of urine, but it is the only fluid that is affected. In fact, excess acid or base is excreted in the urine to help maintain proper pH balance in the body."

Have you controlled for ^^ by drinking the same amount of plain water when you switch off of lemon juice? If you quit drinking lemon water and substitute it with sodas or juices it could be elevating your blood sugar

I said in my post that I did not have reflux or heartburn. I've only had problems with reflux while pregnant.

I've known several people to wear a pH sensor through a gastroenterologist for severe difficult to treat reflux in order to determine that it is true reflux (digestive juices coming back up the esophagus). That kind of problem will cause erosion of the esophagus and tooth enamel. Not blindness.

Then why did you bust in here with your BS when I was looking for people who have acid reflux and heart burn?

I had no idea about the disease you have, but acidosis body acidic levels was not what I was talking about in the OP. I was talking about acidic levels inside your body, mainly pertaining to higher stomach acid content. Yes, my terminology is off, but shit, there are more words in this OP to give you enough clue as to what I'm talking about.

It's not hard to see how drinking any base would offset the acidity in your stomach. However, while researching ways to keep stomach acidity down, I came across the paradoxical reaction of lemon juice. I decided to try it, and I have seen measurable results.

While it makes sense that acid reflux could cause erosion of the esophagus and tooth enamel, I had no expectation that drinking lemon juice would improve vision. I just noticed a pattern that when I had heartburn, my vision was reduced and was painful. I also noticed a pattern of relief when I started neutralizing my stomach.

Do I know why? No.
Does it work? My experience says yes.

I'm just offering a possible solution for people that are suffering from a similar combination of ailments. I would like to know their results in the future.

You framed it as being about an alkaline diet and bottombaby correctly pointed out that this is BS, if only because the body is really good at maintaining a proper pH independent of what you eat: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alkaline_diet#Alternative_medicine

Nothing wrong with self experimentation. There is a pretty big community dedicated to it (Quantified Self). I also follow this dude Seth Roberts who takes the self experimentation thing to a new fucking level: http://blog.sethroberts.net/

Maybe just consider other mechanisms besides alkalinity. Like the Diabeetus.

Well, good to see that GeniusxBoy has solved the cause of cancer. Look forward to seeing his Nobel Prize.

Go to a general practitioner instead of an eye doctor. Get blood work done. Think about it: if you're right about the lemon juice thing then proving it medically will help many more people than talking about it on a message board.

I meant go and explain your lemon juice theory and get bloodwork done during and off to try to determine the mechanism.

Don't be surprised if they suggest it's somatoform.

I spent $762 for them to find nothing wrong with me. Doctors aren't as good as you think they are, nor are they worth the money. The health care system is completely screwed up.

They excel in surgery, but not common sense.

I don't see how this kind of response is going to help you. If you're going to troll in your own thread why not just move this to chit chat.

as for input:
My wife and I did an alkaline diet back in the spring. She read a book about it and said it would help cleanse our systems. It was mainly a month of eating raw vegan 60% of the time and a non-processed Vegan (nothing like tofu, processed sugars, etc., mostly cooked rice, beans, sauteed veggies, etc.) the remaining 30%. I normally have joint pains in my knees and ankle from old injuries, as well as back pain after sleeping and I felt amazing during and after the alkaline diet and a lot of improvement with all my body functions.

I attributed this less to my body PH and more to the fact that I was finally eating healthy and not cluttering my veins with lots of junk. Food logging has been really helpful for me in the past to help diagnosis food related problems/solutions. I found I had an intolerance to several things that way.

If you were part of the game, you'd know the game. My response is appropriate towards the user that posed the question.

Seeing how the original post asked for "people who have acid reflux and heart burn on a regular basis" and have vision problems, this thread has already been derailed since post #2.

The purpose of this thread was not to help me, I have already been helped. I made this thread to help other people.

Also, thank you for your input on the alkaline diet; however, this thread isn't about the alkaline diet. I'm glad you were feeling better by eating right.

Insulin resistant doesn't mean diabetic. I am insulin resistant and my blood sugar is fine. Also, I have ridiculously bad heartburn. I have no idea if any of this means anything to anyone but whatever, I do what I want.

the guy works at a pizza place and probably downs huge carb-rich meals on the regular.

your blood sugar may have been fine when tested, but the reason you're a1c is elevated is because it is often high. This can lead to blurry vision and neuropathy, in fact blurry vision is one of the ways some people discover they are diabetic or at risk for diabetes because of elevated a1c.

This thread is just .

My 2 cents on the whole thing: sounds like a side effect of some illness causing an increase in intraocular pressure (glaucoma, diabetes, autoimmune, etc.). Maybe paying attention to your diet is decreasing the inflammatory response in your eyeballs and the rest of your body. I have no idea how the lemon fits in to all of it.
