Norton keeps notifying me of svchost.exe application is blocked. It's getting annoying. I went to Symantec to take a look and it appears that everyone is having this problem. Should I switch to the quieter McAfee? Why or why not?

You should switch to the free Microsoft Security Essentials

Consider supplementing it with the ClamAV-based Immunet, now that so much malware is specifically written to evade MSE: http://www.immunet.com/free/index.htmlIt's still about as unintrusive as MSE alone and much less so than a typical AV suite.

you're annoyed that your A/V is working and doing what it's supposed to do, so... you're gonna switch to something else...

I would argue that it's not working if the popups are not clear enough to illustrate to the user why something is being blocked.

I hear McAfee shoots viruses DEAD until they Faull over

^^Indeed, and the main reason I still recommend MSE, despite its dwindling effectiveness as malware is increasingly designed to circumvent it, is its near-total lack of false positives.

mcafee shoots viruses in the back of the headand neighbors

Well if MSE is slowly being defeated by circumvention through malware, is there another route?False positives are seriously beeping every four minutes. Usually, that wouldn't be a problem... just mute the volume, but sucks if you want to look at video or listen to music.

^^ haha

The founder of Mcafee says fuck all of it and do hookers and blow. (see google for more info)

^^^Have you considered avast! or Avira?Anyway, the key word is "slowly" and I had already suggested a supplement to MSE called Immunet.

I like AVG. It's quiet and always seems to jump in when needed. This is nearly a year old, but still has some nice info: http://lifehacker.com/5865356/the-best-antivirus-app-for-windows[Edited on November 13, 2012 at 7:08 PM. Reason : moar]

I remembered AVG as being rather intrusive.

LOL at losers who use antivirus.

I prefer ESET NOD32, much higher detection rate and same fast speed as MSE, consistently in the top 3 AV's. Got a 3-user license for $10 over the holidays. MSE's ranking has dropped quite significantly in the last round of tests. Avira is the best of the free options but I just couldn't stand the pop-up ad to buy it once a day. So MSE is at least free and annoyance free, better than nothing I guess.[Edited on January 23, 2013 at 3:09 PM. Reason : .]
