If you have an issue with it blame it on Easley and Perdue for being corrupt and doing a bad job running the state. We have massive population growth and massive influx of high tech money coming into the state and still the state's checkbook sucks even after Easley put in place his pet lottery. Think of all the economic growth that has occurred in this state over the past couple decades, how can our numbers suck?

Perdue, how the hell did this chick sell herself as being good on education? She's from New Bern near where I'm from. Back when she was a state senator or representative she visited my middle school in the mid-90s when I was attending there and pretty much told everyone in charge it was her aim to shut down all vocational education in the Craven County school system. We see how well that worked out, the largest civilian employer in Eastern North Carolina, NAVAIR, had to setup their own college to train workers in trades because no one young is doing them or knows it. And then Easley makes her his lieutenant governor back in 2000 off the back of...education.

Runs the state for four years, gets into her own corruption, and she didn't even have the political balls to run for reelection on her record because she knew she'd lose. If Democrats are upset with McCrory being governor, they should've nominated a better candidate for governor back in 2008.

The NC GOP is going to do well in 2014 too because off year elections tend to be lower turnout and more conservative in NC. I guess we'll see where things stand in 2016 after 6 years of them controlling the legislative agenda.

I do have problems with them riding into office on a message of jobs jobs jobs and instead making it about attacking women, gays, education, voting rights, and the environment. And Pat was agreeing with them the whole time.

I also seem to remember reading something saying, foreseeing a Pat win, they increased the number of appointed positions in state government to increase cronyism, and increased the budget for the inauguration celebration for the governor while slashing education and university budgets. (I'm a fan of public education because it can be an evening out of equality of opportunity and they can't kick you out for being gay or just having gay parents like private schools sometimes do)

Sure as hell won't be the Homosexual Spring. Look at what our Republican General Assembly has done in the past two years to get an idea of what's in store for us:

-Constitutional ammendment to define marriage
-Require abortion patients to view a live-feed of their fetus, or listen to its heartbeat, before an abortion procedure can be authorized.
-Authorized Fracking
-Restrictions on claims of "Racial Bias" in death penalty sentences
-Reduced the period where early voting is offered to citizens
-Expanded casino gambling
-Completely impartial and logic-based redistricting
-Repealed the land transfer tax
-Prohibited federal enforcement of the Affordable Care Act
-Took away the ability for teachers to automatically deduct their union dues from their paychecks
-Determined the Coastal Resources Commission is the only entity that can assess sea-level changes for regulatory purposes; prohibited said commission from measuring sea levels until 2016, and; prohibited said commission from publishing sea level-change assessments that are not consistent with historical trends.

Note that a Republican Governor won't change much for us. The General Assembly has been consistently overriding Purdue's vetoes.

With abortion, I do believe that the woman should at least go through some kind of educational course so that they understand what is about to happen and the consequences. This is not a flu shot they are about to get. It is a potentially life altering procedure and deserves some process of education and thought.

Abortion should be treated like any other major surgery, because it is a major operation, end even more so than many due to the likely psychological impacts. I think what the NCGOP did was completely wrong and in no way truly helpful to the people. Before any major operation, the doctor should sit down with the patient and discuss preparation, procedure, as well as the good and bad physical and mental outcomes. If doctors aren't already doing that for abortion, then I think the government should step in and require at least that conversation. Watching ultrasounds and having waiting periods shouldn't be a decision by the government, but by the patient and doctor.

as the justification for mandated "education". My wife had major surgery recently that literally was life altering (in that she would have died without it). It has also changed her life, and while her condition is completely manageable, it isn't something that she can ever ignore. Should she have been required by the government to undergo "education" before her procedure? Or should we allow her to discuss it with her doctor and leave the government out of it?

I am a democrat and I cant even argue with this. NC is a Right to Work state, with low cost of living, and abundant natural resources. It is ridiculous that there is not more industry locating here. The pharmaceutical and tech jobs are great, but not everyone lives in Raleigh or Charlotte....

Outside of those two economic centers though, what else is there? I think there is room to grow in the middle population cities, but that takes time to build those up and they only come after Raleigh and Charlotte are bursting at the seams, which is what is happening right now. At the same time that NC has become an East Coast tech hub, they've also been decimated by the textile and furniture industries leaving. Add in the financial crash in 2008 hitting all the biggest banks, including Wachovia, and it's not hard to see why things aren't exactly rosy. I will say though, if McCrory can help in creating a pro-business atmosphere with fairly equal improvement for low, middle, and high income workers while not totally raping the environment and gutting education, he could be a very good governor. That's a HUGE if, but manufacturing can't really fall any lower and we've got a great thing going on in the RDU area.

Speaking of education, sex education is possibly the #1 topic which needs to be reformed in schools. Easily Top 5. Kids being uneducated with regards to sex costs the country so much economically, socially, and culturally that it simply must be addressed. It should be a no-brainer, really. Kids who have comprehensive sex education are less likely to end up pregnant, less likely to get STDs, LESS LIKELY TO HAVE ABORTIONS, and more likely to lead healthy, happy lives.

^^^ I think there's still a lot of manufacturing capacity in the Triad region. Still a significant pool of machinists and other manufacturing talent and knowledge; at one point, they still had a very large pool of small fabrication shops and whatnot. However, they need an anchor to take advantage of the new renaissance in American manufacturing, and unfortunately, they weren't able to land some of the big ones, losing out to South Carolina. They have HondaJet and TIMCO plus some furniture manufacturing is coming back into the region from China, but it's not enough yet to help buoy the region.
