We know your opinion Hoops. The government is honest and benevolent. It serves in the best interest of all of mankind. It is the government's job to improve society and they know better than the ordinary citizens how to make those improvement.

I was listening to NPR and there was a segment where they were discussing things that pretty much everyone 'reasonable' agreed on - for instance, that democracy is good. I'll admit that democracy is better than a dictatorship, but it still fucking sucks.

This country has never been a democracy.I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands: one Nation under God, indivisible,With Liberty and Justice for all. Article IV of the Constitution: "guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican form of Government."Hoops: your a product of brainwashing by the media.[Edited on September 21, 2012 at 12:48 PM. I was wondering how long it would take someone to pipe in with "we're not a democracy, we're a representative republic!" 'democracy' is being used in a general sense, as in "a form of government in which the people have an amount of power in the legislative process." not in the specific sense of "every vote is a popular vote."'democracy' as opposed to 'despotism'.[Edited on September 21, 2012 at 1:06 PM. So any system where voting takes place is now considered a "democracy"? Sounds like the term has been watered down to the point of uselessness now.

I'm not sure what you're arguing about. First, You called this nation a democracy.now you are posting about a representative democracy .then you give a link to wikipedia that says:Representative democracy is a variety of democracy founded on the principle of elected people representing a group of people, as opposed to direct democracy.[1] For example, two countries which use representative democracy are the United Kingdom (a constitutional monarchy) and Germany (a federal republic). In the first two sentences. Then to add insult to injury... when you scroll down

That's like saying Libertarian and libertarian is the same word You can't tell the difference in spoken form.Likewise, claiming we are a democracy has the same ambiguity. Democracy in one context is different from democracy in the other context and the context they are using it is in "pure democracy" context and not a "our system uses democracy within the system to elect representatives" context.]

Probably some type of third party organization that resolves disputes. I'm not recommending we abolish the government overnight and replace it with nothing, I'm suggesting that we think of voluntary ways to accomplish the goals most of us want.
11/15/2012 2:58:00 PM
Brilliant, we'll just replace the monopoly on force with a plutocracy on force.
11/15/2012 3:04:51 PM
But we already have plutocracy. Why not open up rights enforcement to competition? Who benefits when those responsible for educating and protecting the population are not accountable to those that pay their wages? Certainly not the consumer.
11/15/2012 3:19:10 PM
There is exactly zero competition for the business of people who don't have money.
11/15/2012 3:36:31 PM
More importantly, all arbitration is simply a precursor to the application of force. At the end of the day, any firm that loses a legal battle can still win the war if they have more force on their side. This is exactly how nation-states work, how China worked for years after the fall of the Qin dynasty, exactly how Somalia works, and exactly how any place works that doesn't have universalized rights and (at least ostensibly) egalitarian enforcement.Private property is the use of force to exclude and evict others. If you talk about firms competing to protect people's property rights, that necessarily means the application of force, and so the ultimate competition comes down to "who has the bigger stick." Here's a hint: It's the person with the most money.[Edited on November 15, 2012 at 3:41 PM. Reason : .]

You're right, and people should help them, and I believe they will. The government is not unique in its ability to provide for poor people, but it is unmatched in its ability to make people become poor, to kill people, and to crack down on social mobility.Government assistance is not charity, and when it attempts to be charitable, it does so in a wholly ham-handed way. A charity can help those that have hit unexpected hard times. It's real, human interaction; the charity can gauge can get an idea of how this person reached this low point and help them become a productive member of society again. The government just sends out a check. It doesn't have the resources or the ability to distinguish between the "welfare queen", the homeless, the diseased, or what have you. It's largely a one size fits all program. If you're eligible and you apply, you get the money. No one from the government comes to make sure you "get on the right track", so to speak.Regardless of government's ability to provide for the poor, there's no reason to believe that it does so optimally. Competition can only benefit the consumer. Even the extremely poor are consumers.
