I assume we would all conclude that paying someone to vote for a candidate is considered voter fraud. However, there seems to be a gray area, and I'm curious where that line is. Let's take a parent/child situation, for instance. If a parent told a child they would pay for college if the child voted for a certain candidate, would that be fraud? Conversely, if a parent had already agreed to pay for college, but then said he/she would only do so if the child voted for a certain candidate, would that be fraud? What if the parent told the child NOT to vote for candidate, or there would be repercussions?

I have had employers who would send out a list of "approved" candidates come voting time, and a strongly worded attachment saying, "If you vote for these people, then you have the highest chance of protecting your livelihood." I don't know if that rises to the level of voter intimidation, or just strong advocacy for an area of law.42 U.S.C. ยง1973gg-10(l) prohibits voter intimidation in any election where federal candidates are on the ballot regardless of the objective of the defendant to influence specific election contests. That's the federal law. I'm sure NC has a similar one, but I don't know it immediately.

That just sounds like scorecarding/effective advocacy/education ^^I suppose it's very dependent on how it's worded, but I would take that to mean my industry as a whole, and therefore my job, is threatened unless i vote for the candidates my employer is telling me about. That's just education, and plenty of groups do that sort of thing. It would have to be much more direct language for me to feel like that was "fraud" or "coercion"

I agree. It was worded enough that it made me feel uncomfortable about it, but not enough that I thought it crossed the line. And it's likely very true. In law, legislative advocacy has a great effect on how we practice and how much money we make. They never asked us how we voted, just sent out that memo of instructions.
