damn
9/14/2012 9:49:12 AM
wow i wonder what that sounded like?
9/14/2012 12:27:19 PM
According to the site I lifted it from she brought her car in for an oil change and asked that they investigate a slight grinding sound under braking. After being told how badly they were messed up she declined to have them replaced, signed a waiver eliminating liability from the shop, and left. People like this are why the rest of us have to suffer through mandatory yearly inspections.[Edited on September 14, 2012 at 12:48 PM. Reason : l]

Spotted this the other day waiting to get on 40 at Gorman St.1 out of 3 brake lights working and plates that expired 3/2011.I could care less about the plates, but working lights are kind of important. I can't imagine getting away with that for very long around here. Hopefully they were just moving it in the day to get it worked on so they can get it back on the road properly.[Edited on September 14, 2012 at 12:58 PM. Reason : l]

Devils advocate: how are you going to know you have a brake light out if no one tells you? Not like you can really check that by yourself.
9/14/2012 1:03:26 PM
Back it up to a garage door/wall, hit the brakes. It will be obvious if an entire side is out. If you really try you can put something on the brake pedal and go look, or just have a friend hit the brakes for you

reflections and rear-view mirrors... its fucking easy i check mine all the time... while driving LIKE OMG...seriously though no one takes care of their shit at all anymore... if its new its ok if it's old and someone isn't doing it for them it's abused
9/14/2012 1:35:03 PM
Brick... meet pedal...and holy cow on those rotors...

what if that light is out too!?
9/14/2012 2:09:46 PM
^ ha ha I envision a dash with all sorts of warning lights on that car. CEL, ABS light, brake light warnings, coolant low, oil, etc. It is a neglected VW after all.[Edited on September 14, 2012 at 2:21 PM. Reason : s]

Oddly enough I have never in my entire driving career had a brake light go out on me. And that's saying something because I've had my Integra for 13 years
9/14/2012 2:26:16 PM
How do I break? Roll from 6 to 1...
9/14/2012 3:35:47 PM
I can't believe she kept driving on those!
9/14/2012 4:06:51 PM
people like that.....they'll get whats comin.
9/14/2012 4:55:54 PM
and btw, that picture is epic
9/14/2012 4:57:33 PM
that picture is shenaniganspad material does not get that close to hub

Tie rod end, right?
9/14/2012 10:04:35 PM
actually, tie rod end, left (driver). You got me. But yea. If the tie rod ends are that bad, I would guess ball joints too.[Edited on September 14, 2012 at 10:50 PM. Reason : .]

WTF, is that supposedly a vented rotor that has had one face worn completely off, down into the ribs?I find that hard to believe. The steel backing of the pad would give way before you made it all the way through a face of a rotor, and how would it only wear away one side of the rotor that severely?
9/14/2012 11:00:00 PM
9/14/2012 11:28:02 PM
Bet someone had fun on a brake lathe and a worn rotor, and then said to the guys "come check this out"
9/15/2012 12:01:18 AM
fake as hell
9/15/2012 1:01:42 AM
9/15/2012 12:26:57 PM
i believe the pic is real as i have seen that happen before. the pad backing plate is made from a much harder metal than the rotors.
9/15/2012 1:24:18 PM
then explain
9/15/2012 6:19:45 PM
^+1You can see where the backing plate doesn't come close enough to the hub but yet the areas it doesn't touch haven't rusted over yet and are surprisingly worn down as much as the plate contact area.Plus i can tell by teh pixals. I'd say that it's a good jalopnik shot, but poorly executed.
9/15/2012 8:17:21 PM
you don't think the pad would move around at all under those circumstances ?
9/15/2012 9:43:57 PM
my guess on vehicle is a yukon/tahoe.
9/15/2012 10:56:05 PM
pads ride on clips top and bottom and will only move in and out. plus there's that annoying clip on the back plate in plain site
9/15/2012 11:02:08 PM
I've seen this happen before. Definitely possible, given enough neglect.
9/15/2012 11:08:11 PM
^^ listen I know how the pad should ride.. On a flat surface made for friction material. On a surface like that I don't think the weak ass clips will keep the pad aligned for shit. But if you look toward the left side it does appear the pad is no longer correctly aligned and is riding in the hub portion of the rotor consistent with the rotor wear pattern. Some some pictures this weekend after showing this thread to a buddy that works at the Sears Auto on Glenwood Ave. Lady comes in with rotors that look like the one pictured here. Took the pictures himself. Definitely possible, and real.
