My friends want to go to a lake tomorrow to grill and drink...the girls want to lay out and go swimming...any recommendations from tdubbers? Thinking about Falls Lake but not sure where to go exactly.

Jordan lake last year was not as crowded as I expected it to be on the 4th.

Seriously though--

Not sure how far you want to travel, but White Lake sounds like a good bet considering what you're looking for. It's about 1.5 hours from Raleigh. Here's some photos: http://www.pbase.com/sentforth/white_lake_north_carolina

Drink plenty of non-alcoholic fluids!

I have a feeling tomorrow is going to be a hellscape of hungover patriots.

Jordan Lake has a pretty big public beach with a roped off swim area right where Highway 64 crosses it. You'll see it over to your left as you cross the lake.

I love Gaston, but don't know a lot of places you can do what you're wanting to do without owning some property or having a boat you can take to an island. There is some sort of public beach right by the dam on the south side of it...Roads access it from the Littleton area I think. There are a few pieces of undeveloped and un-managed land that get commandeered for that purpose, but it's technically private property and there will be tons of people you might not want to be around on a holiday week.

Kerr Lake has some campgrounds. You could try Satterwhite Point if you feel like getting out of the Raleigh area.

Do they allow alcohol at any of the lake swimming areas around here? I could see the park service having fun writing tickets all day.

White Lake is definitely not white anymore. We used to have a place down at Camp Clearwater years ago.

I think there's a beach at Beaver Dam recreation area on Falls Lake. I don't think alcohol is allowed at any county or state parks.

White Lake is really nice for swimming, practically no chop and the water temp has always been good there when I've had a triathlon. The local folks are really nice, too.
