What do you think of the new Google Nexus 7 tablet ? I will post the specs here so people can review it easily. SCREEN WEIGHT MEMORY BATTERY7” 1280x800 HD display (216 ppi) 340 grams 8or16 GB internal storage 4325 mAh (Up to 8 Back-lit IPS display 1 GB RAM hours of active Scratch-resistant Corning glass use)1.2MP front-facing camera CPU SIZE WIRELESS OSQuad-core Tegra 3 processor 198.5 x 120 x WiFi 802.11 b/g/n Android 4.1 (Jelly 10.45mm Bluetooth Bean) USB Micro USB FEATURESMicrophoneNFC (Android Beam)AccelerometerGPSMagnetometerGyroscopeIt does lack a HDMI o/p, a external storage and a rear camera. Do we have any other tablets under 250$ that could match this spec but still has a HDMI and external storage support ?
6/27/2012 7:29:02 PM
Pretty much anything else under that price point will be crap and/or not have access to the Google apps.
6/27/2012 7:41:20 PM
What a complete design mistake not having two high quality cameras in there.Apple has always prided itself on their camera tech, and google could have really pushed them hard on it with what I would consider a very easy inclusion.
6/27/2012 8:04:47 PM
lesbianest, rear facing cameras on tablets almost never get used.
6/27/2012 8:22:16 PM
I ordered one to dick around on/develop withwill report back how it is
6/27/2012 8:28:11 PM
After thinking for sometime I decided that I can go ahead without having support for external storage and a rear camera. But I pretty much need a HDMI o/p. I was checking out 'Atlona USB to HDMI Converter'http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cN1PzslfREc. If I can combine a USB to HDMI convertor like the above one, with Google Nexus 7, do you think it would solve my problem of having a HDMI o/p. Will I get the same o/p as I would get with a dedicated HDMI port on a tablet ?

I'm curious what Amazon's and B&N's responses will be
6/27/2012 8:38:37 PM
no 4g?!?!

One of the things I read today (sorry no source) was that its made soly in US, with mostly US sourced parts. Thats why its so expensive.
6/27/2012 9:26:28 PM
^that would be the nexus Q not the 7The price on the Q is straight absurd[Edited on June 27, 2012 at 9:56 PM. Reason : Which you prob would have figured out if you had googled a source]
6/27/2012 9:54:59 PM
Just bought the 16 GB version. So. Fucking. Excited.
6/28/2012 12:41:20 AM
It figures that Google would release this a little more than 2 weeks after I bought a Kindle Fire.
6/28/2012 2:27:21 AM
^sell/return it
6/28/2012 2:38:57 AM
yeah if this thing had 4g... sold... i need a tablet i can tether to. Work is giving me a phone allowance but must have tethering and i'm not ruining my iphone unlimited data plan for work.
6/28/2012 9:35:52 AM
I'm glad it does not have 4g, no need for added cost & weight when we can already tether from our phones
6/28/2012 10:54:49 AM
yeah, i don't see the need for cellular data services on a tablet for the majority of peopleif you have a smartphone with 3G/4G data, you should root it on general principles and then just set it up as a wifi hotspot...then you can just connect your tablet to thatno reason to pay twice
6/28/2012 11:02:03 AM
Yeah I can tether with my phone plus I have an LTE hotspot. Adding a third would be silly.
6/28/2012 11:04:43 AM
Purchased the 16gb. I bout shat myself seeing the specs and pricepoint. Will be replacing my nook color, dell streak 7 and Chinatab. GG Google, GG
6/28/2012 11:28:02 AM
Verrry tempted to buy the 8gb
6/28/2012 11:35:14 AM
I have the Asus Transformer Prime and absolutely love it, except it was $500 for pretty much the same spec (+5mp rear camera, 10" screen, 16gb)This looks like a promising tablet that gives you full functionality of Android (this may hurt Amazon Kindle Fire) at same price. And Jelly Bean.[Edited on June 28, 2012 at 11:41 AM. Reason : ,]
6/28/2012 11:40:27 AM
It's $199. An attractive price.
6/28/2012 11:53:46 AM
I'm just not so sure browsing on 7" is all that different from browsing on my gnex
6/28/2012 12:17:07 PM
Yeah it's what? 4.5" compared to 7"? Same resolution?
6/28/2012 12:20:43 PM
so this is simply a better kindle fire/nook color

I keep getting really really close to ordering one of these but I'm held off by 2 things. First is tax & shipping. It's kinda dumb to charge shipping on a device where the 2 main competitors have free shipping (Fire & iPad just because it's the #1 tablet). I'd pay for one or the other but at this point I'm thinking I'll either wait for it to hit Best Buy and save the shipping or hit Amazon and save on both.Second is that I already have a Fire and I just don't use it. Part of it is because it really kinda sucks. It's too small for browsing (but 50% of that is due to the shitty resolution). I've also held off on rooting it since there's not a fully functional port yet and so I end up dealing with the slow performance and apps being closed fully instead of saved so I end up losing all my browser tabs and such. I really really WANT one though.
6/28/2012 12:49:28 PM
I'm going to hold off to see what Amazon has.
6/28/2012 12:58:55 PM
Anything Amazon puts out will be a crippled Android...
6/28/2012 2:13:27 PM
^ yup. Nexus 7 seems like a no brainer regardless of what Amazon or the rest offer.
6/28/2012 2:22:26 PM
^srsly. It's got everything but a rear camera and 4G, its bargain basement priced, and put out by the company that owns the platform.I just hope beyond hope that MS does the same thing with the Surface tablets (but I know I'll be horribly disappointed). It's not like Amazon is going to drop a $199 tablet with an nVidia Tegra 4 chipset next week. Other than their content catalog, they don't really have much else to compete on.
6/28/2012 3:13:24 PM
bro, nobody cares about what MS puts out.
6/28/2012 3:17:34 PM
^ I mean based on performance of tablets so far one could say the same about google, so...
6/28/2012 3:45:52 PM
Just bought a 8 GB model. As excited like all others here. Any idea on how long it make take to be shipped ? I couldn't mess this exciting moment by not buying such a great tablet. Waiting for what Amazon, Barnes n Nobles, Microsoft would offer in the mean time .[Edited on June 28, 2012 at 5:15 PM. Reason : .]

No Microsoft would be absolutely retarded to sell the surface at a loss, or even at cost. They wouldn't make any money from the product, nor would they make any money licensing windows RT because nobody would but a non-surface RT tablet.
6/28/2012 10:25:47 PM
I found this interesting. Looks like google just got Asus to make some changes to a tablet that they had been working on for a while, and rebranded it as a Nexus. http://www.theverge.com/2012/6/28/3124041/asus-me370t-nexus-7-transformation-google-nvidiaHonestly, if everything were the same, I think the extra $50 for a rear facing camera (assuming it wasn't some shitty 2MP webcam) HDMI out, and stylus would have been something that a lot of people would have been ok with. I'm sure other manufacturers will fill that gap in the coming months though.
6/28/2012 10:54:42 PM
^Not at all. I would have passed on it at anything over the pricepoint they hit. $199 is the magic number for sure.
6/29/2012 12:54:01 AM
This lack of MHL support on Nexus 7 is really pissing me off. What is the use of 12 core gpu, without the capability to give out a HDMI o/p. Is it a design flaw or was the HDMI o/p overlooked. I'm thinking of cancelling the pre-order of Nexus 7. Did any one already cancel it ? If so pls let me know how do it.[Edited on June 29, 2012 at 1:05 AM. Reason : .]

6/29/2012 1:06:46 AM
Yeah no HDMI out is really concerning. I'm hoping they provide some type of OEM solution like the Apple A/V out cable or something.
6/29/2012 11:02:59 AM
I use HDMI out all the time on my Prime.
6/29/2012 11:16:05 AM
Eventually any type of physical video out will be obsolete though. When I'm at home or in a house with airplay I just do it wirelessly. HDMI out I save for old school households.
6/29/2012 11:45:27 AM
I'm not really concerned with anything it's missing.Rear cameras are retarded on tablets. People who take pictures on tablets look stupid. My phone has a 8MP camera that looks pretty damn good, and is a lot more convenient to use for that purpose. Lack of HDMI out also isn't really concerning me too much. Only thing I'd really want to get out of it media-wise is whatever google play media I'd have on it or whatever is stored on the device (which could probably be done using DLNA or something, or fuck it, I'll buy a nexus q) No SD card slot slightly disturbs me, but with the movement to the cloud, it's not a huge deal.I wouldn't use a 3G/4G radio, so I'm glad it doesn't have one. If I really need data on the go and there's no Wi-Fi, I'll just hack my phone and piggy back off its data.
6/29/2012 12:01:49 PM
I stream all my media from my home server so HDMI out is a requirement. Especially for hotels/friends houses.
6/29/2012 12:11:22 PM
It's fine to OFFER a higher pricepoint, but having the base model @ $199 is the critical volume crossover for nearly any entertainment product.Look at every video game console as far back as the NES. When a console dips below $199, it's volume increases tremendously.Same thing in the netbook space, same thing in the tablet space.Apple was the first company to buck that trend with the iPod and now iPad, but they are a very very unique case.
6/29/2012 4:37:43 PM
Ordered mine a few days ago.July 19th is the rumored Release Date. Can't wait to start developing on this thing.
7/5/2012 6:31:16 PM
I am also put off by tax+shipping. Eff that.
7/5/2012 11:14:37 PM
yeah i'd gotten so used to amazon that the tax+shipping was sort of off-putting, but the $25 play store credit sort of makes up for it
