JR has said he has 2 main goals this offseason:
1. Someone to play with Staal that's actually a first line talent, not a 3rd liner getting 18 minutes. Perhaps RICK MOTHERFUCKING NASH. He said the FA costs might be too high, so a trade for someone like Nash, Bobby Ryan, or Jordan Staal might be in the works.

2. a GRITTY 4th line player.

Not a lot of trades happening yet the day before the draft. Let's hope we see a big name on the Canes roster after tomorrow.

(Interesting sidenote: I know everyone's been talking about Nash, Ryan, Staal, Parise... but what about Mike Ribiero? Apparently Dallas has gotten a few calls about him.)

Man, I really like Sutter, and I think JR did too, but I'm happy overall. We have quite a few prospects and Staal will likely re-sign after the year. Or who knows, with the way JR has been acting recently, maybe they'll sign him for longer mid-season.

Absolutely hate giving up Sutter. Couldn't it have been almost anybody else?

I know Staal is better, but I saw him as marginally better. Not a potential Forsberg/Demoulin/Sutter better.

Now that I'm over the initial shock and giddiness... I am starting to wonder why we gave up so much. At the same time, I do believe that J. Staal is a better player than B. Sutter.. just wondering why we had to throw in the #8 pick as well.

The thing that I think Luke DeCock brought up was that picking up Jordan now kind of leaves us in limbo in terms of getting that top 3 forward that JR was pining for. We don't have the money to re-sign Jordan right away and pick up another big name. On the other hand, Jordan realistically isn't a clear top line guy. A solid pickup obviously, but unless there's some magic money tree that pimp hand found, I worry that we won't any other big moves.

Still missing one key forward to make this all work. Yeah, we get a player to work with Staal, but we still need more talent at Forward.

Ray Whitney, come on down! Wouldn't surprise me to get him for two years, shore up the 2nd/3rd line and add some PP skills.

The more I think about it, the better I feel about our Forward depth. Really gotta hope someone can step up as a 3rd line Center. I don't know if Welsh is that guy though. If not, I can see Jussi centering the 3rd line.

The salary floor is currently $54.3 million, though that will probably change if the players and owners can actually agree to a new CBA. Under that current floor, though, we have 11 forwards, 6 defensemen and 2 goalies signed and are $7.5 million under the floor. We still need to spend.
