The average gets affected by people using 0, 1, and 99.

the website should require users to enter their birth date, and then calculate age automatically, down to days even.

(needless to say, it should give you control over whether you want the birth date and/or age displayed to other users or not)

This doesn't seem like a particularly worthwhile venture. Even if a better (automatic) method were put into place to derive ages, it would still require people to give a correct birthdate or age to begin with. Who says they want to do that?
