I just finished an interview, and was driving home down 95, I was the only one on the road and it was just fun driving. Then this cop pulls out of the median from a backwards slanted slope, so you can't see them driving the way of the road, and aggressively pulls me over. I was afraid to come to a complete stop because I thought he'd rear end me. Anywho, I got proof that my odometer was incorrect, and it didn't mean anything. (While getting my odometer checked, another person was getting theirs checked too, they got a ticket in the same location from the same officer I did). I looked it up and Emporia, VA is one of the largest speeding ticket zones in the USA. So be careful.

I like how this thread is titled "Speeding ticket stories" and then you click on it and it's like "Fill out this 8,000 question survey, and if you don't feel like punching yourself in the nutsack after that, tell a story if you'd like"

It's my first time having this speeding ticket. The police asked me to go on court and was going to charge me $200. Is it possible to waive it?

Except I wasn't actually speeding. Douchebag cop claimed it was 3:55pm in a school zone that ended at 4:00pm, when my car clock, cell phone clock, and his watch all said it was 4:15pm. Was able to get the ticket thrown out though so I guess all I lost was a couple hours going to court.

oh shit, i was riding in a car goin to SC a couple weeks ago and got a 48/25. Was definitely a speed trap. Speed limit was 45 then there was a little convenience store 25 mph sign then a 45 mph sign right after all within like 100 yards. Cop gave us some story about how 2 people died in the last 2 days due to speeding, seemed rehearsed.

I'll play because I'm bored

#1
speed/limit: 77/55
Caught by: Dash radar (was traveling in direction opposite of me)
My vehicle: chevy colorado (truck)
Road: HWY 70, between Kinston & New Bern literally in sight of the speed limit sign where it changes from 55 to 70
Result: Ticketed/got it disappeared (see below)
Location: Jones County, NC, USA
My color: white
My age: young 20s at the time
Passengers: none

Story:

Traveling East on HWY 70 between Kinston and New Bern. I round a curve and a few hundred yards past the curve the speed limit changes from 55 to 70. As I exited the turn, I began to speed up (I travel this route all the time). As soon as I'm out of the turn and probably within 150 yards of the speed limit sign (which increases the limit), I see blue lights come on from the west bound lanes. State Trooper jumps a ditch going at least 50/60 MPH, whips it around behind me. I pull over about 20 yards from the speed limit sign.... he gives me a ticket and shit talks about how he can take my license/arrest me for going so fast ( ).

I call my insurance agent and he says something to the effect of: "ah horeshit, give me 30 minutes". 30 minutes later he calls me, gives me a lawyer's phone number; I call and give them my info, then mail them my ticket and a check for the court cost (no payment to the lawyer).

Fast-forward about 5 years and I begin to wonder whatever happened with this ticket (never heard back from the lawyer). So I'm a bit concerned, I call the Jones County Court/Records and they say they don't have any record of me getting a ticket/having a court date/etc. I check my DMV record and it is indeed clear.

So it just disappeared... and I don't believe the check was ever cashed either.

#2
speed/limit: 79/55
Caught by: Radar (speed trap)
My vehicle: chevy colorado (truck)
Road: NC 421 near Wilksboro (speed limit changed from 70 to 55)
Result: Told to slow down
Location: Wilksboro, NC USA
My color: white
My age: mid 20s at the time
Passengers: 1 female

Story:

Traveling to Boone a few winters ago, I'm unfamiliar with the roads/speed limits. I'm in a 70 MPH zone and as I approach a bridge, I can see I'm coming into a developed area. It's night/dark, I hadn't seen any speed limit signs for a while, and as I got closer to the bridge, I noticed a reflection off on the shoulder and could barely make out a car facing me, on my side of the road. I instantly knew I probably just went through a speed limit change (middle of nowhere to going through a town) and a cop sitting on the side of the road, so combined I knew I had just entered the trap. Sure enough, blue lights come on, I exit at the bridge, pull over on some side road near a huge parking lot and there are at least 10 cop cars sitting in the parking lot, 2 with people pulled over, and as I pulled in, another cop left the parking lot and headed to the highway.

Well, I'm CCing, so I'm a bit nervous (first encounter with LEO and me carrying). He starts his speech and I interrupt him to declare. He ask for the firearm and places on my roof (I wasn't fond of this, but I was nervous as shit) then for my CCP, which I cannot find... I'm about to freak the fuck out. Well he says "keep looking" and goes back to his car to run my license/plate. After about 5 minutes I find my permit (I had cleaned out/reorganized my wallet a few days before). SO I hang it out the window. Some derp cop, who is now standing beside the cop's car that pulled me over sees it, turns his flash light on and just holds. I'm like, wtf is this guy doing? come get my permit. After a few minutes, with his hand on his firearm, he starts to approach my vehicle. When he gets to the back of my truck, he's like, "what is that" to which I reply, "my concealed carry permit" and he's like "what's that?" and I'm like ".... my permit to carry a concealed firearm" to which he replies "YOU GOTTA GUN??" to which I reply "yes, it's on the roof, where your partner placed it". Yeh then says "well, ok" and takes my permit back to the cop who pulled me.

A few minutes later, the cop who pulled me walks up with my papers and says "well, just slow down and enjoy your trip". No ticket, no written warning. I was shocked. I had driven into their trap well exceeding the limit and he let me go.

There's no speed limit sign or school sign on my side of the road. I think this can be a reason why I forgot the speed limit.

Reckless Driving on top of the speeding charge.

Radar detector has notified me every time I've been near an officer on this stretch of road since the incident. It's probably one of the most heavily worked roads in NC. I've found that HP & Sheriff Deputies get slack on the backroads and just drive around with radar on the vast majority of the time. I'll usually get a warning at least 1/2 of a mile ahead of time with plenty of time to slow my roll.

You know what shoot? You're ok. I'd say let's hang out, but I fear an accent barrier will make face-to-face communication quite difficult (sorry, I'm horrible at understanding foreign accents), so let's just leave our communication to the Internet since that will be less awkward.

i got pulled in Currituck County going 60 in a 55 last Thursday night as I inched past a cop- he claimed I was going 68 but I told him I was looking at my GPS and my dash before he pulled me over. He said he got me on radar, had the cruise control set on 60 in his cruiser, etc, but came back with a warning ticket a couple minutes later. That's what i thought

Ignorantia juris non excusat. Ignorance of the law doesn't mean you're allowed to break it. Beyond that I know on Buck Jones Road one of those green signs that says "Speed limit 35mph unless otherwise posted" is up

I'm pretty sure we don't have towns that are 50 miles wide. And it still doesn't matter. Within CITY LIMITS the speed limit is 35 MPH unless otherwise posted within those city limits.

I can't imagine a situation where you would go 50 miles on the same road without seeing a sign but yes, if you're on the same road it would be safe to assume the speed limit was still 55. At least that's what I'd argue in court. But if you're on city streets and you turn onto a street and don't see a speed limit posted you should assume the speed limit is 35 until you see a sign telling you otherwise.

When I was driving around Seattle I was confused as hell as to why there were no speed limit signs on most roads. Then my friend told me everyone's just supposed to "know" that primary streets are 45 and secondary streets are 35.

it was an unmarked car in the dark on a very dark empty stretch of road. I looked for strobes for a good two or three minutes as I slowly approached it. The tail lights looked to be non-standard, but that's basically the only indication I had that something was off. Tag was normal. The window was tinted or fogged up so I couldn't see that it was a cop inside as I came up beside him.

State trooper radar estimated (traveling in opposite direction)

I-44 tollway heading into TX

Just me

This happened about a month ago traveling from Lawton to Wichita Falls. There's a big bend in the interstate as it heads down into the Red River valley where the limit drops from 75 to 70. I'm traveling south a mile north of TX and the OK state trooper clocks me from the northbound.

Having not been pulled over before, I went reaching for my insurance and registration like I've been told before. The trooper sees me rummaging, places his hand on his gun and yells at me to put my hands out the window. I quickly stick my hands out the window as the trooper slowly sneaks up to the car. He curses me for scaring the shit out of him when he got to the window. He tells me he clocked me at 86, which is true, as I was in the process of slowing to about 78. He takes my stuff, asks me to follow me back to his cruiser and sit in the passenger seat.

Long story short: he runs my license, finds out I'm the weatherman here, asks for a personal fishing forecast and lets me go, telling me just to remove the tinted plastic cover from my plate.

Sure. Now show me an example where the speed limit isn't posted for 50 miles.
(There are regulations on posting signs whenever the speed limit changes as well as every so often on the highway, so your theoretical situation shouldn't happen.)

Not me, but I was sitting in court on an unrelated traffic issue ~7 years ago and they called a guy up who wanted to argue his case...because the cop actually wrote him a fucking ticket for 1mph over. Lmao. The judge almost lost his shit laughing so hard and let the guy leave after telling him to try not to go so fast in the future.
