Surprisingly radio shacks carry these (official namebrand style - the UNO?) and a few accessory shields for about as cheap as you'll find online w/ shipping. You'll want to use the arduino online site since these come with literally no instructions or pinout schematics.

Techshop RDU off Glenwood has Arduino boards in several flavors, prototyping accessory kits, and various shields available for purchase. Cheaper than Radio Shack.[Edited on April 22, 2012 at 2:46 AM. Reason : Meh]

^Do you have to join their "cult" to purchase these from them? I refuse to pay their ridiculous fees to use basic tools, lol. I'd rather spend that money on purchasing the tools myself.

try Adafruit.com or ebay. If you're looking for a 'toy' authenticity probably isn't critical and the ebay ones from reputable sellers are seemingly just as good. (I have a Duemilanove and a Mega)The Duemilanove should be cheaper than most, but with the added fusing on the Uno's USB you may be better off.The Mega is overkill unless you know you'll need a ton of I/OsAlso, adafruit.com has several tutorials and projects to use as starters.

^^ Nope, no need to be a member. And personally I pay their fees to be able to use tools I could never afford or have room for myself, like a $20k ShopBot CNC router.
