Watched Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead a few weeks back and decided I wanted to start juicing.

We already own a Vitamix, so I just bought some of those fruit mesh bags. Takes a long time to strain out the juice.

My wife then bought a Breville juicer (similar to the one in the movie). It made tons of foam, though.

Then I was looking online for a better juicer and found the Omega product line. They have the masticating gears that result in much much less foam and, therefore, more juice.

I made some mean green yesterday as well as some fruit juice and drank it all day instead of food.

Sure...but what's the alternative?

If you have a good blender, you can just throw your fruits/vegetables in there and get a...ready for this...nut milk bag...to filter the juice from the pulp. Or a mesh bag you can put vegetables in. They sell them at Farm Fresh...3 for $4.

I did the 5 day reboot over Christmas break. Some of the meals were kind of tasty and gave me some new ideas.

You can find a decent Black and Decker juicer for ~$20. Hope you have a high tolerance for pulp though.

My fiancé and I tried this last year. The Fat Sick and Nearly Dead website actually has some great recipes on there. I didn't fare too well juicing - i had bad headaches because I couldn't take in enough calories and was completely worn down. Once I switched to the recipes that didn't have the veggies getting juiced, it got a lot better. Maybe it was a mind thing, but my metabolism is already pretty high. I would have a juice and then be starving again 20 minutes later.

My fiancé loved it - he felt great the entire time.

^ i was just about to post that... you people throw away the pulp? that's a monumental waste of energy, water, and land.

and nutrition, as well.

on the rare occasion my mother used the carrot juicer when we were growing up, i used to take the pulp that would come out the back and put it into my glass of juice.

be a man and eat/drink the pulp!

We paid $100 for a Kitchen Aid blender that can blend whole apples. I want to keep the pulp,
so straining isn't an issue.

Btw, it was the one recommended by Consumer Reports over the Vegamix/Vitamix/whatever it is.

kdogg(c), how long do you plan on staying on the diet? My BIL tried the diet for about a week and then fell off the wagon. I would really like to see someone actually go through with the whole thing.

It's tough to do. I juiced for 6 days about 2 months ago. I found it really hard to take in the calories I needed. I felt much fuller than expected.

I'd like a wheatgrass juicer, but when I looked into it a couple years ago the ones that could handle that type of material were quite expensive. Anyone know of a cheap alternative? It seems like I read that an old sausage grinder might work.

Woah woah woah woooooah.

First: I'm 6'0" and weigh 160 lbs.
Second: Two different anesthesiologists have confirmed (during sedated and localized surgeries) that I have a VERY high metabolism.
Third: I'm 6'0" and weigh 160 lbs.

I don't think I will every do the straight juice-only diet. I tried it on Saturday until about 11:00 pm and had a horrible headache. I ate some peanuts. Then I ate a hard-boiled egg.

Juicing is great because it gives you the micro-nutrients you don't normally get from eating processed food.

If I do it at all, it will be for a few days, unless my recent blood work comes back that my cholesterol is high because I used to eat a lot of fast "food."

I guess I'm just not understanding what the benefit of drinking only juice is to eating fruits and vegetables in their non-pureed form. How is this different from say the raw diet?

Some foods, such as the wheat grass that I mentioned, are dense in vitamins and nutrients yet cannot be digested by the human stomach. Teas are often an option, but some people want dat 190% product without waiting to evolve into a cow.

My understanding is that it is supposed to more efficiently deliver the nutrients of the fruit and vegetables. I think it also removes some harmful products, but I am not sure which ones.

^^Sorry, just assumed you were a fatty. My bad. My Pop, who is already in great shape, also juices and swears by it. I think the headaches and decreased energy in the first few days is normal, you just need to get past that to see the benefits. If anyone hasn't yet seen the movie that inspired this thread, I definitely recommend.

As long as you are ingesting the juices (and not injecting them in to your blood), I don't see how they can deliver nutrients more effectively. Assuming you chew your fruits properly, you will get the same nutrients out of them.

One thing though, is that you get a bigger quantity of nutrients from juice. Just one glass of juice requires more fruit/veggies than people consume in a whole day, and if you are drinking several glasses a day, you get orders of magnitude more nutrients. However, I do wonder if you miss out on some nutrients as you discard the pulp. You do know that most of the nutrients in fruits/veggies are found in and just under the skin, right?

This sounds not right. People should fully research something they are getting in to. Harmful products from what, the fruits/veggies? If there are harmful products in a particular fruit/veggie, they will be expressed in the juice as well. How can a juicer separate some harmful micronutrient that is embedded throughout the fruit/veggie?

If true, this may justify some juicing. It certainly doesn't warrant a 100% juice diet.

A significant part of dealing with hunger and sticking to a diet (especially when the goal is fat loss or lean mass gain) is finding satisfying foods. Liquid calories are simply less satisfying than food that requires chewing. Vegetables are great for this purpose - they're chewy, have lots of fiber, and they're lower in calories. I bet you can drink vegetables a lot faster than you can eat them. If you're someone prone to overeating, juicing doesn't seem like an ideal solution.

Not the same volume of nutrients. So a carrot that has been juiced will deliver a higher volume of nutrients than a carrot that has been eaten. There is a lot of literature behind this.

Agreed. I think it's too extreme of a diet for most people to be successful with. But I think it could be more effective than most fad diets, and a better option than surgery or medication, which is why I would like to see a fatty actually try the diet.

How is that possible? That goes against physics. A carrot weighing X grams will deliver X grams of nutrients no matter which way it is consumed, whether in liquid form or solid form, as long it is consumed fully. And actually, since you throw out the pulp, you are actually consuming LESS than X grams of nutrients from that one carrot.

But as I said, you don't drink the juice from 1 carrot, you drink 1 glass of carrot juice, and that will be about 5-6 carrots. No one sits and eats that many carrots, so you do get a bigger volume of nutrients from 1 glass of carrot juice than from eating 1 or 2 carrots. And also as I said, I do wonder if you lose some nutrients since you throw out the pulp. And I hope people juice their fruits/veggies with the [edible] skins on, otherwise, they are losing the MAJORITY of nutrients.

I think that juicing allows you to get nearly 100% of all available nutrients from the fruit/veggie whereas your body cannot fully extract that same level of nutrients.

That's my understanding at least.

Somene said it already, but the insoluble fiber takes longer to digest, so you don't get the nutrients as quickly.

But you're still getting them right? I feel like if you just ate a bunch of raw fruits and vegetables you'd be accomplishing the same thing but keeping yourself fuller off of less calories.

No - sometimes nutrients pass entirely through the system without having enough time to be broken down.

Unfortunately, juicing can also deliver too MUCH nutrients into your system, such that the body considers some of it EXCESS and it gets turned into fat cells. That's why you should not be frequently juicing foods with high sugar content.

Chia seeds? Older than Jesus (literally... the Aztecs ate them). I have known about them for a while (as a food), and finally got a chance to buy some at a health food store in the UK a couple of years ago. I love them. They are incredibly nutritious... and expensive!

As for juicing and diabetes: Yes, you will get diabetes if you keep on spiking your insuling level by dumping tons of sugar into your blood stream in a liquid food (juice) every few hours. OK, it will only affect you if you do it for a long time (insulin resistance), but doctors and nutritionists keep on advising us to eat slow digesting carbs (with FIBER), i.e., with a low glycemic index (GI), and here you are saying that it is better to inundate your body with so much sugar all at once without the fiber.

EVERYBODY agrees that it is better to eat low GI carbs (except just after a workout).
