My mom's birthday is coming up and I want to get her a peacock (or 2) to wander around in her yard. She has 14 acres and already has chickens. I am terrible at finding things on the internet and have no idea where to purchase a peacock. Help me please.

there was a little magazine you could get at gas stations when I live in Hiddenite and it was basically a huge classifieds book and there were TONS of people selling peacocks and other such things.

i cannot remember the name of the damned magazine though

my friend's parents have a few peacocks and have been waiting for them to die or give them to someone that wants them because they are more work than they care for.

I shall ask if they are still there.

I used to ride on a farm that had a flock of peacocks- they did a pretty good job of alerting you to
people coming down the driveway, sort of like aerial alert dogs.

Now I get chased around by a guinea cockerel who thinks I'm one of his hens, at another place.

They're not too bad. My grandmother has a couple. When they get startled they'll be loud as fuck but it's not really a constant thing.

Ok so after reading the responses in this thread and talking to some people, I have decided that peacocks may not be the best idea. Anybody know of a reason not to get lavender guinea fowl instead?

guineas make a LOT of noise too, just not as much as a peacock from what i've been told. they're kinda territorial but i think they're cute.

I mostly shied away from the peacock idea when I read about them fucking up people's cars. The lavender guineas I found for sale in Durham are really pretty.

the only guineas i've been around were ones at the pumpkin farm picking on the little rubber pieces sticking off my tires. idk that they'd really do any true damage, but they certainly enjoyed pulling those off.

guineas don't really make a lot of fuss until someone/something comes in your yard, which is a quality some folks like. they also do a good job of ridding your yard of ticks.

wife's mother has guineas

they definitely make a ruckus when something's going on (someone pulls up or something), but they make noise ALL THE TIME...even at night, if they're roosting nearby, you'll hear them (though it's not LOUD, just ongoing)

that said, i want some myself

Completely different direction but my parents have sheep at their ranch and those things a pretty cool animals, dumb as rocks but pretty cool nonetheless. Not sure if that is a good idea in your area or not (I admiditally don't know shit about them) just throwing something out there. They seem pretty easy to take care of, my parents only go up there some weekends but then again they have a lot more space.

One time a random guinea fowl came into our yard at the crack of dawn. It was very noisy and woke up everyone. I guess it was lost or something, but seemed upset. I let the dog out thinking it would just run back into the woods, but it just stood there. Also, I hate birds.

so apparently there are wild peacocks around here? I was driving down yates mill pond rd. yesterday and a fucking peacock was out in the middle of the road! I almost ran over him, and could only manage to take a very blurry picture. it was insane, though...anyone else spotted one of these around here?

i'm kinda wondering if someone had it as a pet and it got loose.
