I think that I'm one of perhaps two or three people that post here anymore that listen to true black metal. Here's a few from a quick run through my playlist (avoiding the biggest/most obvious names without going too obscure). If you're on board with any of this, throw me some suggestions

Dodsengel
Gris
Gronde
Judas Iscariot

Im into Children of Bodom, which is kind of black metal I guess. I dont segregate genres though, if its good metal and I like the sound I will listen to any band regardless of genre....with the exception of nu metal.

I guess it depends on what you are calling true black metal.

Im always open to suggestions of new music to try

Im more of a melodic death fan though personally.

Paysage d'Hiver is my motherfucking JAM. I love that guy.

I'm more into atmospheric black metal than the really raw, kvlt stuff, but I still like a lot of the bands you mentioned. Other stuff you might like: Angantyr, Kataxu, Krohm, Lunar Aurora, Vinterriket, Peste Noire, Funeral Mist, Terzij de Horde, Austere, ColdWorld, Hate Forest, Permixtio, Darkspace, Mutiilation, The Great Old Ones.

I think they're more Viking Metal, but I'm a huge fan of Bathory and Enslaved. Gorgoroth and Mayhem are probably the more "black metal" sounding bands I like, but I personally dont dig the whole "lo-fi" thing that a lot of artists (Burzum, Darkthrone) go for.

indeed. pretty brutal stuff. If you haven't already you should check out Tsjuder's album "Desert Northern Hell" and Urgehal's album "Goatcraft Torment," think they'll be right up your alley.

(hey BHS he spells it out in the beginning of that one)

Not black metal. Nothing against them, just not what I'm referring to itt

Awesome. Thanks for the list...Already very familiar with Vinterriket, Funeral Mist, ColdWorld (I want to like them but I just can't give it up for'em. They definitely have their moments but in general too much reliance on keys for atmosphere for my tastes) and Darkspace. Definitely will look into the rest

Good show, sir. I excluded them under the "obvious names" clause but they certainly hold their respective places

Just got a Darvulia album in the mail today; you'd probably like it. Basically, if it's French black metal, I probably like it--Darvulia, Angmar, Blut Aus Nord, The CNK, Merrimack, Mutiilation, Peste Noire, etc. I first got into French stuff with some of the more atmospheric black metal groups like Alcest, Amesoeurs, and Les Discrets, but I dunno if you're quite as into that side of things.

I have to take the French stuff on a band-by-band basis, it's a varied and unique subset and where a lot of it works, some just falls into weird-for-the-sake-of-weird. I love Blut aus Nord, the Vlad Tepes/Belketre split, Antaeus, Gris (if Quebec counts as French) for example, but I've heard more than one French atmospheric album touted as absolutely visionary and it sounded to me like the ass-end of a b-side album Varg would have written in prison on a casio

But yeah, lots of names for me to check out. I haven't had any free time since the semester resumed but I will update, keep'em coming as you think of them. After checking out Peste Noire, I had a stroke of recognition and went and dug up an old rip of their La Sanie des Siècles - Panégyrique de la Dégénérescence album that I forgot all about. Definitely good stuff.

If you google "Norwegian death metal," all of the first page's results are for Norwegian black metal.

And you misspelled Dethklok.

I picked up the s/t a couple years ago and Dimensional Bleedthrough about a year ago and, while they are definitely talented as hell and an interesting group, they just haven't sunk in with me yet. They'll have a great idea or an awesome melody or a genius riff or something and then drive it into the ground with that spastic dissonant guitar dueling, takes me out of the mood. But maybe I just need to spend some more time with it...most bands that I can say I truly love I didn't really get into on the first couple listens. In any case, krallice is definitely some hipster post-black stuff but I'll allow it!

Quote :

wat? Assuming you mean "scandinavian" in general, even the swedish death is a little too melodic and "epic" for my tastes (gothenburg in particular), with a few notable exceptions. Finnish death is almost always not death but folky or avant-garde and norwegian death barely even exists. Mainland and eastern europe (germany, poland, austria, greece, occasionally france, and where old-school death is concerned, england) are more consistent with sick death metal, but even they don't compare to the the good ol' USA. Proud to say we've got death metal on lock over here

Dimensional Bleedthrough is my least favorite album, however Autochthon is my favorite krallice song. The new album is better. S/T is the best. I hate to admit that they are hipster black metal, mainly because they don't really claim to be a black metal. They're brooklynvegan at it's best. All the best weird metal comes from brooklyn. In general, black metal is minimalist, harshly recorded (at least in the original days because it was a bunch of poor teenagers trying to record shit as fast as possible) and in someway satanic, anti-religious, anti-establishment

I recommend anyone who likes metal or even people who don't to watch some of the documentaries on it. These people were truely evil and lived the lives they sang about. Its borderline scary, but cool.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i4U33U_UyzQ
I just started watching this now and i'll report back. So far they said gaahl is the most evil man alive and i'd have to disagree.

Until the Light takes us is the best documentary i've seen on black metal. Pretty unbiased imo.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-NScR9AjQUE
There is one that is just a recording of interviews and conversations with the original members (that weren't murdered and didn't commit suicide lulz) WITH the interviewers edited out that is pretty cool, but it focused on mostly the negative stuff and not as much on the early ideologies that those kids had.

atilla is probably my single biggest vocal influence...not that I really try to sound anything like him but his pure, sincere hatred on the de mysteriis album definitely struck me as the way to go in those early days when I put down the drumsticks and picked up the microphone. akerfeldt and tagtgren later had their influences, and more recently kvarforth from shining...but atilla will always be that sentimental #1
