Should we really consider changing its name to something else?People get confused when I talk about yesterday's America versus today's America. To me America stands for Freedom. I think the more legitimate problem is not with the "America" part (it refers to that whole giant land-mass west of Europe and Africa that the western Europeans re-discovered during the Renaissance) but with the "States" part: Increasingly (and largely for the betterment of the union), the states have lost much of their autonomy to a drive for greater uniformity in the laws of the nation.Maybe a better term would be "Federal Republic of America" (despite the reduction in state-level autonomy, our system of government is still federal); the second-level political divisions could still be called "states" (as they are in, for example, México, even though they never had that level of autonomy) but the memory that the first of those political divisions were once thought of as independent nation-states has sufficiently faded.
