One of the HDDs in a RAID 6 volume in my research lab is being reported by the RAID controller as having an ECC ERROR and the volume is listed as degraded. I'm going to replace the drive in question.

Do I need to do anything to the replacement drive, like formatting (the volume is XFS), or will inserting a new-out-of-the-box HDD be sufficient to start the rebuild process?

I haven't done much with XFS but any of the FAT or NTFS systems I've messed around with just require you to put the new drive in, and it will rebuild itself

Most RAID systems rebuild themselves as they have to rewrite the parity data to the missing drive.

You need to follow the instructions from your RAID controller for replacing the disk. Running XFS on top of the RAID array has nothing to do with replacing a hard disk.

Most likely, just swapping out the failed disk is all that is needed.

I figured the bare drive was fine. Thanks, TWW. My RAID controller manual is annoying vague on many details. I'm still trying to figure out how a 200+ page manual can be so unhelpful.
