I just bought a new car so i took the plate off my old car and put it on my new car. Anyway, I got pulled over in FL and the cop took my plate. The plate is a NC plate. My question is how do i get my plate back? Call NC DMV?

call dmv and say it was stolen.

Why were you in FL?

Seeing how it's perfectly legal (in NC at least) to put your old plate on a newly purchased vehicle, I'd call their department and ask them what the hell that dickbag did with your plate. Either that, or I'd just go with ^^ and call NC DMV to report it stolen. The latter being simpler, but I'd love to know where he got off actually removing the plate. Hell, I got pulled in FL with an expired plate, the registration sticker from another vehicle that didn't belong to the owner of the car, and no registration paperwork. Cop told me to get that thing back home ASAP and try not to get caught again on the way.

The reason I asked is If he was in FL because he is now a FL resident then his NC tag should have been confiscated.

When I got my new car in November, the dealer told me to put the old plate on the new car and drive it home, and that they would handle contacting DMV to get the registration, and just tell them it was pending if I were to get stopped. So while I don't know if it's officially blessed, it's at least commonly done.

No tag is better than trying to use a "fake" tag. Just have the property paperwork with you

yeah, i'd think as long as you had the paperwork in hand and you're on the way to the DMV.i just found out in NC you can run an old plate from the model year of a car 35 years or older, as long as you have the registered plate and paperwork accessible in the car.[Edited on February 20, 2012 at 9:19 AM. But how many actually dispose their car? From what I understand, trading-in or selling a car is not disposing; junking/recycling a car is. [Edited on February 21, 2012 at 4:23 PM. Reason : ...]

only thing that really matters is a florida resident having NC tags.

the car is under my mom's name. She still lives in NC, hence the NC tag. Anyway, I got her to report the tag stolen, so they gave her a new tag. She's sending it to me yesterday. Problem solved.
