Dude, this "don't go to Durham, it's dangerous!" shit has got to stop. It's ridiculous! Yeah I am sure it is funny. But when you glance at the socioeconomic background and the type of people that live in those neighborhoods, you realize how much shit you're giving this area. It is a symbol of economic injustice and the 'them vs. us' mentality that persists in our national attitude. Be happy about your place in society...class-consciousness needs to happen in this country, bad. What a damned shame.

Durham's new city slogan:

Durham. It's exactly like Fallujah.

So basically the OP is saying "you will be robbed and have the shit beat out of you, but you're a dick for saying anything about it."

And yeah, I know Durham has some very nice areas. I enjoy them too. No need to act naive about the legitimate problems of a city though.

So is this a troll or are you reposting something someone else said to point out the ridiculousness?

I've been harassed by the homeless much more in downtown Raleigh than downtown Durham, and I work in Durham.

People act like there's no sketchy housing project areas in Raleigh

Never had any use for Durham but now that I spend some time there it's actually pretty nice. Better food than Raleigh plus its different and new to me so I'm intrigued.

If the only way you can defend a city is by saying it has "good parts", it's a shithole overall.

Durham's problem isn't that it has poor people. Its problem is that it only has really poor or really well-off people.

Durham is a class society. So the answer is for everyone to leave Durham and turn whatever's left into a big ironic urban hippie organic farm.

Let's be honest, most people who speak as if merely stepping foot in durham will get you shot and/or robbed are just bigots who are scared of black people. They're the folks sitting at a stoplight and see a black dude walking by and lock their doors.

Shocking, people who love chain restaurants, suburban sprawl, strip malls, and wall-to-wall HOA neighborhoods don't see the appeal of Durham.

I, too, am confused as to what produced this rant, or reposting of one.

Quote :

What? I live in Durham. I am neither poor nor rich. And before I get labeled as the exception, the whole part of the city I live in (South Durham near the mall) seems pretty middle-class to me. Parkwood, Woodcroft/Woodlake, Crooked Creek, etc. and the surrounding areas are neither ghetto nor full of fabulous estates. Yes, taking the city as a whole there are some stark class divisions and you do have cases of only a block or so separating a very sketchy area from a rather well-off one, but it's not just one or the other. And it has a lot of good points, notably the food scene.

Yep. While there are certainly parts of the city that I would rather not frequent at night, the vast majority of it is no big deal. But there are many parts of the city that are majority black. This itself is not really cause for alarm, despite what some folks might think. My fiancee, who is a slender 5'4" white girl who looks like she wouldn't hurt a fly, was a case manager for a couple of years and had clients in the worst parts of the city, and she said that she never felt threatened.

That's actually very similar to what my dad keeps saying about Rocky Mount. The vast majority of the crime is criminals against criminals and only a small part of it leaves the gang/criminal influenced neighborhoods. While there have only been a handful of serious incidents in their (current) neighborhood; I worry about them going to the mall, Wal-Mart,etc where serious incidents are not so rare. I'd really like to see them move somewhere a little safer.

The neighborhood I grew up in was on a border of the housing projects. My parents no longer live there, but I learned a lot of lessons in that neighborhood. I got off the school bus in the projects and my brother & I were usually the only ones who walked out of the projects on our way home rather than staying there.

One of the things I learned early on is that "safety" is relative and not just by location. There is a big difference between feeling safe driving around and visiting the local businesses during normal operating hours versus feeling safe when your car breaks down at midnight and you have to walk a mile or two to get home or to get some assistance. Even in those situations where you might feel perfectly safe a family man has to consider what would his wife or children might experience in the same situation.

These things are never black and white. There are a lot of grey areas. I'm happy to live in a neighborhood where I feel safe leaving my house on foot 24/7. If an extra $50k or a smaller house & yard buys the peace of mind your family needs it's a small price to pay in the long run.

Who was the TWWer who moved to Durham and had her house broken into twice in the first couple years? I really can't remember who it was, but I sold her a cooler through TWW classifieds.

I felt really sorry for her. I remember thinking it would be terrible for a young family to make a huge purchase such as a house and have it ruined because thugs can't keep their hands off your shit. I'd be interested in hearing her thoughts on this.

A lot of people I know in RM (especially the females) insist on going to the Wal-Mart in Nashville instead. There were supposedly shots fired in the Nashville Wal-Mart right before Christmas, although it was not in the newspaper when I was home over the break. My uncle's wife was in the store when it happened, but she was far enough away that she couldn't confirm whether there was a shooter or not. Sounded crazy though and it makes me wonder how many crimes go unreported in The Rocky Mount Telegram.

If not liking Durham because the government is ass-backwards, there are some real bullshit ordinances (i.e. unconstitutional), and because there some regulators make up phony regulations to suite their personal preferences makes me a redneck, then so be it.
