So, i'm looking for a standalone HD placeshifter that I can stream video from. I've only been able to find Slingbox and HAVA/Vulkano products in the little bit i've been searching.

Does anyone know of any similar products I should look into? Experiences?

over the open internet or do you have a controlled environment (like locations connected via VPN or hard wires?)

will you need more than just a single input?

how many concurrent viewers?

For a more commercial solution check out the epiphan VGA2Ethernet. When our church changes facilities I'm probably going to switch over and try it out so I can route everything over the IP network instead of running 2 dummy cat6 cables everywhere I want a TV or projector.

Some premade NAS boxes can provide streaming transcoding abilities. You can use a linux or BSD box from a PC for a similar purpose. FreeNAS does this and pretty powerful for being opensourced. You can stream video over the net once you use an dns forwarder like dyndns.org or no-ip.com with your NAS setup.

But if its more than one viewer and larger requirements than just personal, ^.

open internet - password protected if possible though

nope, just need a single HDMI in from my STB

probably just me

Ideally, if it could have some sort of web API and an IR blaster so i can control the STB from a remote location, that'd be great (otherwise i have to do some google tv remote/vpn nonsense)

i don't want to have to set up a transcoder on a PC, get a video capture card, blahblahblah

wondering if that's doable for cheaper than a slingbox

oh, you are using an outside source to rebroadcast? thought you were thinking of HD files saved on a pc. Yeah, slingbox is probably the cheapest solution, works pretty good. I still have my old rca one that I got on woot.com years ago. Pretty dated now. Might grab a new hdmi one so I can plant one at my parents place since I really don't feel like paying for cable tv atm.

what you want is a slingbox. the android client and bandwidth negotiation is worth it assuming you want this for anything beyond LAN
