Quote :
"The Honda NSX supercar is set to return as a 400bhp four-wheel-drive hybrid. Honda has already confirmed that a new NSX will be revealed at the Detroit Motor Show in January, and now we have more information on the Japanese Audi R8 rival.

We’ve already seen spy shots of a concept car on the set of the new Avengers movie, and we’ve since had confirmation that the Detroit show car will be heavily based on that model. Our images show a coupe, but the final production version will also be offered as a roadster.

The concept will be shown as an Acura – the firm’s luxury North American arm – but it will be badged as a Honda when it arrives in the UK, and retain its forebear’s NSX name. Power will come from a 3.5-litre V6 driving one axle and a pair of in-wheel electric motors to turn the other. This will give the NSX four-wheel-drive traction and 400bhp-plus. Performance will be impressive, with 0-62mph taking under five seconds."

Well, the original NSX didnt exactly beat speed records. I remember thinking it was quite slow compared to cars that cost half as much.

i thought the orignal (1990) was pretty stout for it's time. the problem is the improvements they made were incremental at best.

also, i am entertained.

Well let's see here. It cost around $65k and was on par with the Ferrari 348 ($110k+) and slightly slower than the 911 Turbo ($100k+) and Viper ($65k?) and was faster than the Corvette ($40k?). Around a road course track it was faster than or the equal of all of those.

Of course Honda never really updated the car and it fell behind a few short years later.

3 things:

1.) For the amount of money they're going to charge for that thing it better hit 60 in less than 4 seconds.

2) Signs that they don't care about making a serious sports car: a convertible version will be offered, and it will be hybrid (i.e. heavy)

3) When's the last time Honda/Acura impressed anyone with anything? (my guess is late 1999)

I'd like that, and I'd even like if they made the hybrid or convertible version. Though I'd want the coupe.

I actually thought the original price was a lot more than 60k. They inflated the price over the years without the performance, which probably relates to my bias against the car.

Nissan 300ZX TT was about 5 seconds and 40k as I recall at the time.

^its situations like these where I am happy to dig into my extensive automobile magazine archives. Pulling out the September 1990 issue of Car and Driver I find a supercar comparison of the Acura NSX, Corvette ZR1, Ferrari 348ts, Lotus Esprit Turbo SE and 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet. Of note, they intended to test the 911 Carrera 4 coupe but the transport it was arriving on crashed, oopps!

Price as tested:

NSX - $58,300
ZR1 - $59,750
348ts - $103,400
Esprit Turbo - $83,095
911 C4 Cab - $80,257

0-60:

NSX - 5.2
ZR1 - 4.9
348ts - 6.0
Esprit Turbo - 4.8
911 C4 Cab - 5.3

Finishing order was (first to last): NSX, 911 C4, ZR1, 348ts, Esprit Turbo

Man I love keeping these old magazines around, lol.

The Road Test digest in the back indicates that the 300ZX was tested in the February 1990 issue.
Price as tested: $35,175
0-60: 5.9s

[Edited on December 29, 2011 at 4:20 PM. Reason : old magazines rule]

Actually, I stand corrected. The 300ZX was tested at 5.9 seconds with apparently the slowest driver in the world.

But it is funny I remember the 5.1 second number. My memory is really failing me.

I do know the GTZ was testing below 5 seconds, but I dont know the price of that.

Are there any cars you actually like, or do they all suck? It's like, every sports car that every maker makes has to be made to your exacting specifications or it just sucks dong. Surely you could be content with a car like this? The fuck are you going to do with it? Rip through every corner and race away from every stop light as fast as possible and just sulk that if it were only a couple hundred pounds lighter you'd...well, you'd be happier with the performance? You going to make it exclusively a track car? Some combo of both?

^yes they were.

^^im just stating a fact. Designing a chassis to also accommodate an open cockpit adds weight, no way around it. In this case that has little to do with my interest level, as the hybrid factor is the gorilla in the room.

chance... he's just stating he wouldn't buy it.

some of us do actually go to track days and attempt to use our cars at their full potential.

I still wouldn't buy anything that's a hybrid unless it uses flywheel technology personally because batteries still suck.

I'm not going to lie, my ideal sports car would be a road going audi r18...
could you imagine a light-weight semi-high revving diesel sports car?

it would get 30+ mpg around town 50+ highway and still go like a bat outta hell and not have all the potential electrical demons of a hybrid.

that's my 2 cents.

toyota is supposedly making a supra.

mazda just axed the rotary, i don't expect to see them having too much zoom zoom any time soon.

and IIRC mitsu is making hyundai engines and focusing their company on EVs.

Hyundai, Chrysler, and Mitsubishi are part of the Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance. It is in some ways a successor to Diamond Star Motors, an alliance between Chrysler and Mitsubishi which brought us the Eclipse/Talon/Laser.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_Engine_Manufacturing_Alliance

those three companies have been working together for decades. Mitsu and Chrysler have been supplying each other with stuff since the 1970s, and Hyundai has licensed technology from Mitsubishi in the past.

Revealed... looks ok, but I prefer the body shape/proportions (front-engined) of this one from 3.5 years ago that we never got a good look at. Now that it doesn't matter, why don't you show it to us, Honda?

Here is the new concept:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UzaynkoC04k

Quote :
"Regardless, the new NSX concept is a hearty preview of a very real production vehicle which Honda says will launch in the next three years. Remarkably, the NSX will be developed by Honda R&D Americas and manufactured in Ohio for export around the world!

Just like the orignial NSX from the early 1990s, the next-generation supercar will have a mid-mounted V6 engine, make use of lightweight materials and include Honda's Sport Hybrid SH-AWD (Super Handling All Wheel Drive) hybrid system.

Honda didn't mention any performance specs but previous reports have stated the NSX will output 400 bhp (406 PS / 298 kW) and the two electric motors will be placed in-wheel. 0-100 km/h will arrive in less than five seconds.

The hybrid drive unit will have a next-generation VTEC V6 engine with direct-injection and 2 Electric Motor Drive Unit as Honda refers to it. Transmission will be a dual clutch unit with a built-in electric motor to create the kind of acceleration numbers that are in supercar league but while offering excellent economy.

Speaking at the Detroit Motor Show, Takanobu Ito, President and CEO of Honda Motor Co., Ltd, who led the development of Honda's first NSX supercar, explained the values of the new NSX, "Like the first NSX, we will again express high performance through engineering efficiency. In this new era, even as we focus on the fun to drive spirit of the NSX, I think a supercar must respond positively to environmental responsibilities.""

i read it's supposed to be priced around $150k.

That's ridiculous for a "less than 5 seconds 0-60 time." It had better be less than 4, for that amount.

I am sure it will be in the mid to high 3s. That's just how some companies press releases (or rumors) go "less than 5"... yeah, 2.5 seconds is also less than 5.

The GT-R does it in the high 2s now... so "less than 5" won't cut it, in a manner of saying.
