I've never felt with this before because i just buy proper batteries, but my Dad got some cheap battery for his Sony Vio laptop. It comes with a CD and supposedly it has a utility to update the bios with some hack so this battery will work.

Is this a good idea?

A lot of OEM batteries have digital "signatures" specifically to prevent the use of aftermarket units, so it's entirely believable that you could hack the software on the PC to bypass that check. I'd say do a little research and if no one has toasted their machine with it, then go for it.
