When im using powerpoint, I want to be able to go in and change the spreadsheet at certain intervals updated regularly without anyone seeing what is going on on my PC.I know there is a freeze button on many projectors but is there anything on the PC itself I can press to freeze the output to the VGA or HDMI cable and freeze that image on the TV or screen?or would a scan converter be my only option? any recommendations are welcome

I don't really freeze the screen but I have done something similar. Use the projector as a second monitor and you can do what you need to on the primary monitor. If you need people not to look at the slide while something is happening you can use a blackout.

Short of using the freeze button on the projector, ^^ is your answer.

well if i do not have a projector connected but instead a straight VGA cable to a television, I can still do the same thing essentially?black out the second screen...but it wont just freeze whats on the screen, it will actually black it out?not exactly what im looking for.

Yeah you can do the same thing. Monitor/TV == projector here.

is a scan converter my only other option to leave whatever is on the screen there? without a projector obviously

What do you mean by "I want to be able to go in and change the spreadsheet" in powerpoint? You mean you have an Excel spreadsheet embedded in a powerpoint presentation? And what do you mean by "certain intervals updated regularly without anyone seeing what is going on on my PC.". You mean you're updating data values in the spreadsheet?Be specific with what you're trying to do. I have a dozen different ways to help you, but you're OP is incredibly vague.

I thought that was specific but I will try again.I have copied a link and pasted special from Excel with data in it. this is then pasted into a powerpoint presentation. its essentially a score from a quiz show type thing. I want to be able to look at the excel spreadsheet, input a new set of numbers or data and have that reflected in the powerpoint on the future slides without having to go in and change each slide individually. I do not care if previous slides have the data or score changed from what they were when look at.I want to have the scores and questions on the screen or TV and Freeze that screen so they see the question, then be able to go in and adjust scores without it duplicating what is on my PC screen. and then when the date is changed, go back unfreeze and continue.

This should work just by simply running the presentation in presenter mode. You'll have to set the TV as a second monitor (extend, not duplicating the desktop). Set the presenter screen to the tv and you should be able to do just that.
