A friend of mine needs to do a good bit of community service between now and march (~75 hours). She was telling me yesterday that she was having a really hard time finding someplace that will let her do it with an assult charge. Anyone have any ideas?

SPCA? As long as she didn't assault puppies lol. Or the Public Library. They seem to take anyone for community service.

She told me she checked the library and they said not with an assult charge The hours to volenteer with the SPCA were only from 8am-12 or something and she couldn't swing that with work

Dang really? I guess they're afraid she'll throw books at patrons or something lol.Has she tried the Food Bank and the Salvation Army already? She could also try calling TROSA: http://www.trosainc.org/contact/index.htm While I'll don't think they have anything she can do within their organization, I wouldn't be surprised if they know of organizations in the Triangle she could do service with that won't care about her assault charge. I imagine they get people like that going through the program regularly.

Wake County Animal Shelter?Carolina Tiger Rescue?

Call some folks on an adopt a highway sign and see if they'll let her pick up trash. No human contact involved since the cushy community service jobs aren't biting on an assault charge.

Try something related to Habitat. A co-worker of mine spent several weekends building various structures with them after beating his girlfriend to within an inch of her life.

^^^ Not a bad idea. ^

"Assault charge, huh? Welp, here's a hammer."
11/29/2011 11:15:42 AM

I did 100 hours up at the food bank off wolfpack drive (off atlantic & highwoods). They pretty much don't care what your offense was and the guy who heads it up is pretty chill. IIRC they were open 9-4 every day including saturday.
11/29/2011 1:14:34 PM
sounds like she is making excuses. the SPCA has volunteers 7 days a week.
11/29/2011 4:00:53 PM
Are these court ordered hours? If so, why did her coordinator at the community service office in the courthouse not assign her a location?
11/29/2011 4:24:55 PM
We had some CS people work with us at Pullen Park a couple of times, but Lake Johnson is the main CS location for Parks and Rec. Cake job.
11/29/2011 4:33:04 PM
I guess it was the shelter that she called and only had daytime hours. I just talked to her and she got in at the SPCA and is going to do her work there
11/29/2011 4:37:35 PM
^^^ Ya if they are court ordered they should be assigning them.

TROSA has been running a few Christmas Tree places around. I know there's one in Chapel Hill and one in Durham. I dunno if you can do community service at the tree places, but it'd be worth a shot.
