We are cleaning out our attic today from past roommates and are taking a lot of stuff to Goodwill.Best finds: a shirt that says "I only sleep with Republicans" and a gay porn mag. I've also located a nice wheelset for a bicycle. What have you found in yours?

We've never looked in our attic. That's one reason why I'm asking for a ladder for xmas.

Boxes and boxes of old train schedules from the 40s.

^^i thought most attics had the fold-down stairs. is it common to need a ladder to access the attic?

We now live in my grandmother's old house. She cleared out the attic several years ago, so there aren't nearly as many things up there as there use to be. But there's an old steamer trunk full of year books from Winthrop University when her mother attended and from when she attended, a few old Agromecks from my dad attending NCSU, and then a year book for every year that she taught public school. Then there is a safe with miscellaneous papers and bank bag of old coins. Some old furniture. And then lots of random things for cooking and canning.

^^ I don't think so, but it is in our garage and there isn't a string attached to pull it down so we can't reach the handle. After we pull down the door, I would assume stairs would appear.[Edited on November 5, 2011 at 6:58 PM. Reason : -]

ours is like that. we access the attic through a scuttle in the garage which you need a ladder for. no built in ladder.

I remember when my parents first bought their house, they found a plastic chandelier that looked like some shit you'd find at one of those Medieval Times restaurants, a dead mummified squirrel, and bags of cut hair

^ Oh, it's currently at the Goodwill on Garrett Rd., and the gay porn mag is in our bathroom to freak out the boys. I still can't figure out why it's ok to suggest certain sexual positions in these pictures, but it's not ok to actually show the act? Like you can't figure out what the actors are going to be doing? Someone told me it had to do with "blue laws" vs. national distribution of the magazines.

I haven't a clue. There is an access panel in the garage that might or might not have steps attached to it, but I'm betting no because the ceiling in there is 10 or 11 feet. In fact, the pull string to lower the panel is way too high to reach unless you're standing on a stepladder, which I don't have. The house was only built in 1998 though so there wouldn't be anything too old up there anyway.

At my first rental house in Raleigh circa 1998 we found one of those magazine covers from the fair where they put your face on the cover of a popular magazine and sell it to you for $20. It looked to be at least a decade old. The strange thing was that two of my roommates recognized the kid in the picture as someone who had moved to Rocky Mount for a brief period and been in their classes in school in the early 90's. Also in that attic were several pieces to a beer brewing kit including a bottle capping tool. One afternoon while my roommates were at school I re-capped some Icehouse bottles filled with water that I would occasionally slip into the middle of the fridge as a prank. In a friend's attic off Franklin street in Chapel Hill we found an ironing board that my brother has been using for the past 10 years and a Beach Cruiser bike with no front wheel. I slapped a 20" wheel from a BMX bike on it and we hit the streets. It wasn't very practical because the pedals hit the ground if the bike was leaned over just a slight bit, but it looked cool I guess.I didn't find any sweet stuff in my current attic, but I did find a hidden tube of Astro Glide in the closet three years after I bought the place.
