The new course plants in folklore myth and religion with R Beckmann, this was supposed to be an on campus course but the professor had medical surgery so was absent for the first 7 weeks until after fall break. this wasn't known until after the first day, so the first half of the course was online and i can't believe they expect you to teach yourself for that long. they couldn't even bring in a substitute.

You're overreacting. Also, Beckmann has a terrible health problem every semester. He's a nice guy though.

It begins.

what a strange course

if you can't teach yourself this material, drop out of college beckmann's classes are classic "easy A" scenarios, even with weird stuff happening as it does.

This class is awesome! I would ask for an incomplete and then take it again the next time it's offered. It might be a "classic easy A" class, but that's besides the point. There's very few classes that you'll ever take at NC State where the pressure isn't to regurgitate knowledge, but to explore your creative horizons and just think about what it would be like to be in these other places and times. The class isn't about the grade, it's about making you think outside the box and being a better thinker/learner because of that. It also gives you more cultural knowledge than most of the classes you take in CHASS, but in a more scientific way. And Dr. Beckmann is awesome and really interesting! If you knew him, you'd know there's no way in hell the school could ever find anybody else to teach this class.[Edited on October 12, 2011 at 12:45 PM. Reason : p.s. It's not a new class, I took it 8 years ago when it was BO and not PB]

actually i got a 98 on the first test so I don't plan on getting an incomplete and even though this is an elective i need this course to graduate. but i have heard he was a distinguished professor and other good things which is why I took the course. i am just voicing my frustrations that's all and i think a lot of this is regurgitation anyway. it's just hard to teach yourself this especially when you are not a plants major. i don't know much about folklore, or myth or religion either. [Edited on October 12, 2011 at 3:13 PM. Reason : and why so much writing for a science course?]

actually in a sense the course is all papers, the only grades are the 4 tests which are all essay questions and require several paragraphs to answer. they require advance preparation because he gives you the questions a week before. 9 people dropped the course so far, i guess they couldn't handle it

well finally the first actual lecture for this class was today, it was very bizarre, the teacher went for about 20 minutes then had to stop teaching because of exhaustion. shame because it seemed like a lot of people were actually interested in learning about the stuff.

this class, and that prof. is a cakewalk. I got A+'s in every class I had with him. you'll get one too most likely. he's been doing the no-show because his back hurts thing for yearsssss now. often go to class and find a note on the door or get an email a half hour before saying class was canceled.

yeah I got an A+ but the class would have been a lot funner if he actually taught them. he said he was cancelling because he had surgery and the drugs made him too weak.on the final exam I just made something up for the last question because I didn't study it since I was graduating with highest honors anyway, and I still almost got full credit for it lol, got just enough points to get an A+ for my final grade lol.
