there may be an existing one that's better, but i couldn't find one searching chit chat or the lounge with the keyword "coffee"...this thread will likely die long before reaching page 2, but i'm giving it a shot

in this edition, i offer you (3) 17.6-ounce vacuum packs of jacobs krönung coffee for $12.72 after subscribe & save discount and free shipping: http://www.amazon.com/Jacobs-Kronung-Coffee-17-6-Ounce-Vacuum/dp/B001GVIT6E/

if you've never had it, you should try it...yes, this is ground, and yes, it's ground very fine...it leaves sediment in my stovetop espresso and i don't drink the last couple of sips out of a cup...but it's a very good, strong coffee (and made better by making it espresso-style)

if you're not into espresso, this will make a decently strong pot in a drip maker, too

I love coffee

After working in various coffee shops for almost 5 years, it sucks to have to pay for my coffee now

I had one today and bleh

I keep a little electric grinder, espresso brewer, and drip pot. Buy Larry's Beans and Counter Culture and just grind by the batch. Thinking about getting a french press and trying it... honestly don't think I've ever had french press.

My french press is a life saver at work. It's so much better making good coffee than drinking the shitty community coffee...

You guys ever had Peet's?

Mmmm...good stuff.

And I think this would get more play if it was in The Lounge.

I have one of these and use it year-round

http://www.toddycafe.com/shop/product.php?productId=67

Quote :
"Developed and patented in 1964 by a Cornell University chemical engineering graduate, the Toddy Cold Brew System extracts the coffee bean's true delicious flavor and eliminates much of the acidity, producing a bold, super-smooth coffee concentrate that may be refrigerated for up to 14 days without any deterioration in taste or freshness.
"

It is perfect for making iced lattes. And since I drink iced coffee in the winter months, its perfect

that's b/c once you properly brew a cup of coffee you'll never want to drink those crappy k cups again. frosh responded to my question about this preference in the k cup thread

Quote :
"Let me qualify this by saying I am not familiar with how Keurig processes the coffee for K-Cups. All I know is that it's ground and, if I had to guess, nitrogen-flushed. I'm going to assume it is for the purpose of answering the question.

The substances that make up the flavor and aroma of coffee are so strong because they are highly volatile, which basically means they vaporize at room temperature. When you grind coffee, you expose more of these compounds to the air (or water when brewing). The aromatic compounds will more or less boil away if ground coffee is left sitting, which is why it goes stale and loses its flavor.

Nitrogen flushing is a technique for preserving the aroma and flavor of coffee. The processor replaces the oxygen in the bag or jar (or K-Cup, presumably) with nitrogen. Oxygen causes oxidation, which will destroy aroma and flavor. Nitrogen is more or less inert, so the volatile compounds have nothing to bond with.

Of course, your containers are never totally airtight, and flushing never replaces all the oxygen, so this preservation doesn't last forever. The coffee still degrades, and it can be very noticeable if you're used to freshly ground stuff."

As far as the brewing hardware I just have an inexpensive programmable drip pot, but I do have an electric grinder so I get whole bean coffee and grind it just before brewing. Makes a really big difference in the flavor, IMO.

I'm having a problem with the presses I use. We have a 3-cup and a 12-cup press. Both are Bodum Bean Presses (below).

We've put them into the dishwasher a few times and the little bits of food that get flown around in the machine get stuck in between the plastic and the glass.

I have tried taking the glass out to clean out the gunk, but they are in there pretty good.

Any experience with this? Any recommendations?

And, I'm sipping on some foo-foo Harry & David Decaf Dark Chocolate right now (wanted to switch it up a bit from the regular Trader Joe's JOE coffee).

Oh, I found a coupon for a new kind of Peet's:
http://www.peetscoffee.com/medium-roast-offer/?cm_re=billboard-_-link-_-image&cm_sp=save3dollars-_-hpbillboard-_-image#&taf_c=gd5e

It's selling for $5.99 at the Commissary.

I don't see how this is much different from just doing what most coffee shops that cold brew do: mix grinds with cold water, let sit for a couple of hours, then strain with a gold filter.

hmm the ones I have you can easily remove the glass from the case. But ours have the metal casing, not the plastic crap. I don't think that should make that much of a difference. But anyway, I'm pretty sure the instructions tell you you're supposed to remove the glass from the casing before washing to avoid the exact problem you're having

I think if I tried taking the glass out now, my wife would have to take me to hospital due to severing my ulnar or radial artery.

Okay...so I guess I never really tried to get them out. I used some olive oil on the little one, then heated the crap out of it (almost burned my hands in the water) and used a wooden spoon to push out the back ends.

Did the same with the second (sans oil) and it worked fine.

All clean and talked with the wife about us not putting them in the dishwasher.

i'm asking for the REI vacuum infuser mug for my birthday or christmas...i need something thin enough to fit in my scooter's cup holder and the "bullet" vacuum mugs i already have all have that pop-top that is a huge pain to clean (and they're cheap chinese crap anyway, so they don't keep things super hot for more than an hour or so)

this one has rave reviews for keeping things hot or cold for extended periods of time, and i think it's kind of neat to have the built-in filter for brewing coffee directly in the mug or for tea

My work switched to Keurig. Really don't understand why. 1) It's more expensive. 2) We're a small office, so it's not like we're having to brew a new pot every 10 minutes.

^Good question. PROBABLY someplace downtown? I've never really thought about it. No one that I go to for coffee really keeps late hours later than 11PM. I'm probably overlooking a gastropub downtown or something.

Also, I've been wanting to try manual coffee for a while. Thinking about getting a Chemex or an Aeropress. Not really sure yet.
