I was thinking about selling my bike on craigslist but i dont want to get a bunch of spam. then I was thinking about ebay, but i dont want to pay someone % on sale. I would try to sell it here but I know i wont get what i want. Anyone have any good/bad experiences with selling a motorcycle?

I had a good experience selling my motorcycle on craigslist. I received no spam and got a lot of interest and ended up selling it that same day. After the amount of interest I got, I must have sold it at a lower price than I could have, but I had tried to sell it a few months earlier at a slightly higher price to no avail. I think the time of the year has a lot to do with the volume of buyers and the price you can set (somewhat obvious with motorcycles). But I wouldn't completely discount Craigslist due to spam, I've sold two cars a motorcycle and a four wheeler on craigslist and only had two scam/spam attempts that were easily spotted and ignored.

yeah, i hear ya. thanks for that info. I am thinking craigslist probably is the way to go.

so how did it go? did you just have the person bring the check to pick it up? then do you take them to the bank to make sure it goes through?

what about title transfer... Gotta go to a notary with the buyer?

Cash is king. Checks don't clear for a week. Instead, offer to go to their bank and have them withdraw cash for you. Or certified check, but again it could be a fake check.

Cash in your hand if they want to test ride it.

And yes, you'll have to go to a notary together to sign the title over.

that sounds like the right way to do it.

I have heard horror stories of people coming to test ride it and then just taking off with the bike. Cash in hand for a test ride sounds good.

I usually meet them at their bank and get them to give me a cashier's check or cash. The bank will almost always have a notary on duty, but it wouldn't hurt to call ahead and make sure.

The5thsoth just sold his bike on craigslist up north. He got a few spammers though, one of which wanted to use PayPal combined with a face to face bike transfer. Its a fraud, so watch out for that.

Yea, I would avoid anything that isn't cash. That's the only way to be sure, and meeting at a bank is convient because they can get the money and a notary is there. I've heard the cash in hand before a test ride on motorcycles before and it makes sense. When i sold my bike the guy hadn't rode a motercycle before and therefore didn't feel comfertable riding it so I didn't have to deal with a test ride.
