My fan is starting to dry my nose and throat out at night, and it is really hard for me to stay asleep without some sort of white noise. Anyone here use one that they like? This is the one I'm considering right now.

it doesn't matter where I put it. I've tried putting it in all different places. I keep a warm mist humidifier running at night, but the fan just cancels that out.

I can't hear it outside the room, I keep the door closed to keep the cat out. I'm a very needy sleeper. I've put the fan everywhere I can think of, and it's running on low, but unless it is off my nose and throat dry out and crack.

^I guess I could try and find a white noise cd, never even crossed my mind.

Has no one tried a white noise machine?

They definitely make ones that are just ocean waves, or like thunderstorms which is what I sometimes use. My room has no real white noise in it, but if I'm tired I can also pretty much sleep anywhere.

the computer has too many lights. i'm pretty settled on getting a white noise machine, but I'll try a cd first.

are you a mouth-breather at night? Or a snorer? That would have a much bigger impact on your throat than a fan. A fan by itself does very little to dry out air. It mainly just mixes it and creates noticeable airflow.

Now, having air blowing right in your face or something can definitely dry out your face or mouth/nasal cavities, but if it isn't blowing right in your face the fan wouldn't be high on my list of culprits.

the fan bothers chris so we use this. plus it doesn't wear out and eventually pulse like fans do. nice steady whrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr & you can change the pitch or tone or whatever you call it, plus the speed.

**this thing is different from the noise maker you posted bc it actually generate the noise. it's not a recording of white noise, a beach, rain, etc. it only makes the one sound. it has some sort of little fan or something inside but it doesn't circulate air like a fan does.

oh most definitely in the fall and spring. i use a warm mist humidifier to counteract that, but turning the fan on seems to cancel it out. my nasal passages dry out even if i'm not breathing through my mouth though

I'll second the Marpac unit shown above. You can tweak the sound until it's just where you need it to block out noise and at a tone you can stand to listen to. Don't get one of those ones with a repeating recorded sound. I had one and I was able to pick up on when the loop repeated and then started focusing on repeating sounds/tones in what was being played back and so on. It wasn't random enough for me not to think about it.

For our nursery we just use a stereo without an antenna tuned to a frequency that doesn't have a signal.

^ We use white noise in our nursery as well. We just downloaded an mp3 from http://simplynoise.com/downloads.html, uploaded it to an old ipod and plugged it into a cheap dock/alarm clock on loop. It drowns out everything from the dog barking to loud parties.

i have the machine in 73's above picture. it's the shit.

i've been sleeping with a white noise machine for literally my entire life. they are indispensable but it can become difficult to sleep without one if you are in that situation

We sleep with one as well. I sleep to white noise or thunderstorm. Thunderstorm is best for me, but it's fun to mix it up every so often. I used to sleep with the one on my cell phone. There are tons of free resources. You can also find free sound machines online. mydreamcloudonline.com is great.

But we ended up buying a machine. Ours is from brookstone.

I have this 'air purifier' from target and it makes a the noise I sleep to. I can't sleep without it, although I'm actually interested in this thread to see if there are any better recommendations out there.

This particular air purifier is cheap, but they try to get you on the filter refills being ridiculously overpriced. I just disassemble the filter and wash it out under warm water

We have that Sleep Mate that se7entythree posted above in our kids' room. It's great, fills the whole room at night with white noise and is really compact. Anytime we travel overnight it goes with us. In our room we have a Honeywell HEPA air purifier that we've had for years and use that for white noise (also helps with my wife's allergies).

on the whitenoise stuff, i use a free app for the iphone literally called "white noise" where i can use it to listen to steady rain. it's perfect when i'm having a hard time falling asleep.

it also has the noise that a fan makes.
