Better* and more affordable for the high school crowd

Better in the sense that they will not be going quite as fast when they hit that tree

Yeah... i've seen what happens when you give a highschool male a 300hp rwd car.

the car has about a 30% chance of surviving till graduation from my school's statistics.

Quote :
"What??! You're comparing a 2011 Mustang to a 20-year old Fox? Fine, then, if you get to compare their hp #s, I get to compare their current prices. Of course, the old Fox is an even shittier car by a wide margin, and it's old on top of that...of course, for 1/4 or 1/5 of the price, you could buy one that would blow the doors off of a new V6 Mustang.

Of course, it should be obvious by now that comparing a 2011 V6 Mustang to a '92 Fox is about as useful as comparing it to an '85 K-car, a '58 Chrysler Imperial, a '97 Diablo, or a '69 Lunar Rover (not to be confused with the British Rover Series trucks of similar vintage, although they are about as equally dumb of a comparison)."

It's not comparing the 2011 V-6 to a 20 year old Fox Body. It's comparing this years V6 to last years V8. The numbers don't lie.

2010 Mustang GT:
# Torque: 325 ft-lbs. @ 4250 rpm
# Horsepower: 315 hp @ 6000 rpm
0-60 (Motortrend): 5.2 sec
Quarter Mile (Motortrend): 13.7 sec @ 103.7 mph

2011 Mustang V6:
# Torque: 280 ft-lbs. @ 4250 rpm
# Horsepower: 305 hp @ 6500 rpm
0-60 (Motortrend): 5.1 sec
Quarter Mile (Motortrend): 13.7 sec @ 102.0 mph

Quote :
"^^^ and if there is an 1000 hp V8 model for just a few thousand more, and the only 2 reasons to buy the car are (a) maximum straight-line thrust per dollar spent, and (b) buying an iconic car, a nearly 50-year American tradition...

well, you do the math."

It's more like a $8,000 difference. Base V6 starts at around $23k; GT starts around $31k. Two completely different classed cars. In that <$25k class the V-6 Mustang is a real competitor. Why buy an inferior car (that will probably also be 4-6cylinders) just because you don't think a Mustang should have a V6?

not that I would buy a mustang anyway, but if I did, it would not be a 6-cyl... nor would it be automatic. Why buy a mustang when you can buy something else not as inferior? It is all a matter of opinion...

^ you're one of those people that wouldn't own a mustang because of it's stigma.

I two would rather own a car that i don't feel like growing a mullet when i drive, however investment vs return... its hard to beat either mustang when looking for a 2 door rwd car with a back seat in each respective price range.

you really can't get a better return on investment.
If they put this driveline in a not so rednecky 4 door and hit similar price points, i'd own it yesterday.

^ ok i would like a manual tranny with a v8 in a 4 door.

g8s not only have an auto its a problematic one too and it doesn't come with a warranty either wich sorta ruins the comparison $/return on investment.

A cts-v wagon in a few years would be awesome... but that's in a few years

Ah, well the GXP model came with a 6 speed manual. But they're incredibly rare and are out of that price range (at least the originally were I have no idea what resale is).

haha, GM ought to pull some of the 'Vette design team and build an Evo/STi competitor...powered by some flavor of LSx. Prob wouldn't be legal for WRC homologation, though.

[Edited on August 24, 2011 at 5:00 PM. Reason : man, that would be holy-shit-awesome if they managed to not GM it all up.]

I would rock the hell out of one of the new V6 mustangs... this coming from a Mustang lover who always stated "if its not a V8 its not a mustang"

I will go to my grave saying that the burbling and snorting of a big V8 go together with a Mustang like hookers & blow, and would lament the loss of it even if I knew it was the cost of progrses...but I could accept a turbocharged 6-cyl Mustang pretty willingly if there wasn't a higher performing V8 as an alternative.

...and it's not just a mindless obsession with horsepower across the board. I mean, if I were buying, say, a Mercedes C-class or E-class, I'd get the cheapest, smallest engine they offered, as those cars aren't really about speed (unless I was buying the AMG version, which is another story, but even then, there would have to be a compelling reason to buy it over an ///M competitor, because those cars are about speed, and the BMWs generally go it better.)

or if I was going to buy an utterly boring, slow-ass Prius...I wish they'd offer an even cheaper, even less powerful, even more fuel efficient version. Fuck it, I'll take a 19-second quarter mile if it'll run 85 mph fairly reasonably and get 60 mpg.

but a Mustang is a different animal with a different raison d'etre.

Buying a V6 Mustang is like benching Larry Bird to post up Shaq on the perimeter, or having Spud Webb pound the boards while Dennis Rodman is setting screens.

hookers and blow would be my preference to owning a mustang of any kind. with that said mustangs and camaro's should be straight piped v8's. redneck and loud is how they should always be.

Honestly the most probable way of me having a newish mustang would be a drag car or a track car.

Muscle cars are about well Muscle.

I don't think its about what type of engine so much (although traditionally its been v8), but rather cramming as much TQ and HP under the hood of a mid sized car as you can, and then selling it. Ohh yea, it also cant turn well.

also keep in mind American cars (and especially the icons such as mustang/camaro/challenger - thanks Hollywood!) are considered "exotic" in many corners of the world, and people there (generally used to small displacement engines anyways) do not discriminate as much about the engine/transmission choice. I've been to my home country last year and i swear i saw an IROC gather a small crows and get more attention than a Bentley parked nearby, while various late model Beemers and Mercedes (including a variety of G wagons) were literally dime a dozen and did not even demand a second look.

This is very true. They have to have a high volume model with a decent profit margin.

Quote :
"Rumors of a V6-powered Corvette model have been floating around for years but weren't taken very seriously until Motor Trend decided to spend some ink on it a few issues ago and predict the six-cylinder model would revive the "Sting Ray" name. The model would basically be a Chevy-branded version of the Kappa roadster that GM has liberally passed out to such brands as Pontiac (Solstice), Saturn (Sky) and Opel (GT). Chevy's version would be different in that power would come from a V6 rather than an inline-four cylinder, and rumor has it that it would be badged a Corvette. Kind of sounds like a long shot, but Rick "Corvette" Conti, the #1 Corvette dealer in Ohio (w00t!), cites sources somewhere in the universe that tell him the rumors are true and coming sooner than we think. He says the "Sting Ray" name, however, will not be used on this chuckable roadster that should come with a 6-speed automatic and a price tag right below $30,000. He also hints Chevy may drop a bomb in the form of this V6 Kappa at the Detroit auto show in January"
