I am moving out of town for one month and need internet. If I buy any USB modem online that is made for verizon, can I then just walk into a verizon store and get it activated and a (x)GB plan and use the device? For instance, if I buy http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=verizon+usb+modem&hl=en&cid=10172500186550349765#pcan I then get a one month service plan added to it and use it for a month?

I am not aware of any month-to-month plans for the USB data devices from any of the major carriers.

Why not just call and check. You can buy at full price and sign up for a data plan online with no contract so not sure why you wouldn't be able to just add it if you already had one.

As long as the USB modem isn't tied to a plan in negative standing, you can activate it on a prepaid/month-to-month plan. It's like 50 for the 1GB and 80 for the 5GB.I have a $200, giftcard, 3G USB modem, and a Cradlepoint that I carry around with me as backup internet for our stores.

Can I use any device or do I have to buy the device with the plan?

Got it in the mail. Called Verizon, they couldn't activate it on prepay for unsaid reason but they activated it on a month to month plan with no contract with 3G 5GB for $59.99.Supposedly it takes 2 hours to activate so I will make sure it works tomorrow morning. So far, this is working perfectly. Hopefully tomorrow will continue the trend.[Edited on August 4, 2011 at 9:46 PM. Reason : e]

odd, when Verizon activated my work card, it was almost instantly up. Although we bought a used one off a Verizon employee. Worked pretty good in remote areas.

well i followed all of the instructions and it won't activate. So apparently I have jinxed myself. Now I have to call verizon again.....

I have a Sprint Mifi and a 3g/4g card, and the Mifi is a son of a bitch to activate every time I switch. Did you try resetting using a paperclip?

I have a verizon 4GLTE device with 10G a month for 80 bucks. I can suspend service and not be billed. I also am only charged for what i use. So when i turn it on for a week while traveling for work, i pay for a week/% of my total allowance. Its a USB modem.

i got it working. it was actually pretty easy, i was being a dumbass and sitting in an office where i wasnt getting service on the device. once i took it outside and tried to activate it, it worked right away. service is awesome, easy to use. loving it

yeah, and its pretty fast if you get a signal, even in rural areas, which surprised me. I was out in the middle of no where in Florida last year on a shoot with my boss and his iphone got no service, but the version card was flying.

Thanks OP. I activated my modem on the 59.99 MTM plan today in preparation for the hurricane. Before reading this thread I had no idea they started offering this type of deal instead of prepaid.I'm hoping that I can do exactly what you described Lokken and suspend service + reactivate whenever I need it and not wait 2 hours or pay activation fees. If you have any more information on this process do share!
