#19Sheik Yare Abdi washes the body of four-year-old Aden Ibrahim in preparation for burial in accordance with Somali tradition, inside the makeshift shelter where Aden's family lives among other newly-arrived Somali refugees on the outskirts of Ifo II Camp, outside Dadaab, Kenya, on Tuesday, July 12, 2011. Doctors were unable to save Aden, who died of diarrhea-related dehydration after four days of inpatient care. (AP Photo/Rebecca Blackwell)I mean, I know it sucks but c'mon. Give them the water while they're alive.

I seriously couldn't care less. I'm at the least-I-could-care mark. I don't see them trying to help themselves other than pirate people's shit for money.[Edited on July 29, 2011 at 1:25 PM. Reason : .]

You realize that European and American intervention in the area has caused substantial problems, right? I don't think the blame rests with you or me, but these people are not destitute simply because they're lazy...and they're certainly not all pirates.
7/29/2011 1:37:08 PM
They have a problem. They need to fix it.We have our problems. We need to fix our own first. When our problems are solved, then we can spread the wealth. It's the law of survival.

Compassion...you do not have it...
7/29/2011 1:45:29 PM
I have kids, they need to go to college. They need a roof over their heads and food in their mouths.Yet somehow I find money to donate to Doctors without Borders. Maybe our government can't afford to send more aid, but surely some private citizens can.

We get that you're not willing to help. I'm not willing to help either. However, it's not because I don't care, it's because the problems are much bigger than anything I could hope to influence in the short-term. You, apparently, just don't care that they have problems, which is why we would say you don't have compassion.

They are exactly where they were 20,30,40,50,60,70 years ago.I do not call that progress. You want to see progress? Look at the yearly progression of the United States. THAT'S PROGRESS. (specifically regarding food supply, clothes supply, housing, and standard of living)You want to see progress? Look at the yearly progression of the China. THAT'S PROGRESS. (specifically regarding food supply, clothes supply, housing, and standard of living)You want to see progress? Look at the yearly progression of the South America. THAT'S PROGRESS. (specifically regarding food supply, clothes supply, housing, and standard of living)It only works when the society itself makes it happen. When things are "given" to people in the form of "charity", the system will fail once the supply stops.

I think it's funny that we have this problem in the United States. And this problem:problem in the United States. And this problem:in the United States. All of these problems and Africa's problems stem from the lack of personal and social responsibility.[Edited on July 29, 2011 at 3:33 PM. Reason : .]

See this thread I made originally: http://www.thewolfweb.com/message_topic.aspx?topic=614203It links to this article: http://www.spiegel.de/international/spiegel/0,1518,363663,00.htmlBasically, the article describes the process by which Western countries attempt to "aid" various African regions, and how the aid actually makes things worse, as it prevents genuine growth from taking place. So, I actually agree that we shouldn't be giving a bunch of aid to these countries. However, I still feel compassion for these people, and I think many of our current policies are making things worse. For instance, our drone attacks on Somalia. You're essentially making the "bootstraps" argument (not one I disagree with), but I'm saying that Western powers aren't blameless for the conditions there. There are policy changes we could (and should) make that wouldn't hinder progress in these regions.

Africa doesn't have a drought problem, it has a poverty problem. Solve the poverty and Africa could import all the food it can't grow itself.

Compassion and money are two very different things. Not once in this thread does anyone ask to give money. This is about awareness. As for do something about it, I am already involved. Nothing on TWW or people's responses surprise me anymore but that doesn't mean i am not saddened by them.

Actually, it does. Are you intentionally being boneheaded, here? European and American powers actually have policies in place that are hindering growth in these regions. If people were compassionate, they would recognize that our irresponsible economic policies have consequences, and they would demand that the politicians make a change. When all you can think about is yourself, and what policies affect you personally, lives are ruined, because you don't demand change from your government. Try thinking about how you might feel if you were on the other side.
7/29/2011 5:12:17 PM
You're putting the blame on everyone but themselves. Popquiz: How much food does it take to feed a whole continent of people who do nothing all day except for sitting there, have sex and make more babies to feed, for a lifetime? As far as European and American policies that are hindering them, you mention nothing about the wars that pillage progress and the corruption among community leaders and government officials alike that hoard AID. This idea that Africa's problems are down to a lack of "personality responsibility" is complete bullshit. Africans are poor because they were in the Stone Age until about a hundred years ago, because their first contacts with more advanced civilizations came in the form of rape/exploitation/military domination, and because their their political ideals have not yet had time to catch up with their military technology, i.e. African leaders and gangsters possess 20th-century weapons, but no concept of/respect for political justice.

this reminds me of a south park episode where all the hippies are having an awareness concert but they don't actually do anything. They just talk about it. I guess what i'm trying to say is, if you're promoting awareness, also promote how you can actually try to help these individuals. And not just financially, because ultimately it just hurts them more than actually helping them ( as someone pointed out early ). Providing them water and food is good to fill those immediate needs but if that is all you're doing then you're just exacerbating the problem.[Edited on July 29, 2011 at 6:40 PM. Reason : x]
