what's next door to capital city club 16? there's always a lot of people milling around outside that look like the people who hang out at the brewery.

the crowds are not similar. Brewery is high school myspace metalcore kids.

They used to have good music, and the venue has been there forever. So be sad about that, I guess...

The crowd they catered to is shrinking. Rock music, or music that is at least tangentially related, is in decline.

1. That's not true at all.
2. In recent years the Brewery catered to a very specific niche market populated almost exclusively by people under the age of 20.
3. It's not being closed due to lack of business (note the capacity crowd lined up outside the door at 6 PM yesterday), it was purchased by a developer to be torn down. Same folks who bought and razed Farmhouse, Blue Flame/Gumby's, & Hillsborough Street Music, I suppose.

Yeah, it's one of the last hillsborough st. institutions, so that's sad.

That said, I haven't been there in many, many, many years - mainly because of the crowd.

I saw Cunninlynguists there a couple years ago. It hasn't been ALL metalcore.

Either way, it's a sad day.

There was a time when the Brewery's booking was almost on par with the Cradle's, but that was fifteen years ago.

I practically grew up in the place. if you drove by on Sundays from 96-99, there is a good chance you saw me putting letters up on the marquee

with that said, I'm not really that sad to see it go

There were still a lot of good shows there that weren't all HS kids too; Dillinger's set there a few years back was actually one of the best shows I have ever been to (and I have seen them multiple times other places as well).

A lot of people may not have liked it over the past ten years when Tom took it over, but he did a great job from a business point of view by base-loading the venue with what was locally popular / what the kids wanted to see while also actually being able to bring in some good bands. I mean let's face it, you're not exactly comparing apples to oranges with size and building condition/facilities with something like Brewery vs Cat's Cradle so you are somewhat limited. But I think he did a good job with what was there.

It was also a really fun place to play and the people that worked there were always very good to us from the first time we played there as the opening act to later when we consistently headlined the place. They consistently paid more to bands there even when shows were relatively cheap. I don't know if we played anywhere that paid more per person in attendance.

I feel like their higher-caliber shows were far-too infrequent to keep up with the likes of Cat's Cradle.

I saw Chiddy Bang at Cats Cradle about a year ago and I know they've had some people like Mac Miller and Mike Posner pretty recently also. I'd love to see something else like this open up on Hillsborough St. in the future, but the Brewery hasn't been that kind of place in a long while.

I saw a show there fairly recently, and I was shocked - shocked I say - at how many little high school punk (?) kids were there. Doing their swinging-fist dances and wearing their tight jean shorts / vibrant band t-shirts.

But I like the metalcore music enough to look past that.

So earlier I randomly remembered a significant event that occurred at the brewery. I was helping a good friend's band out with roadie type shit back around 2000, and after a show a guy from one of my classes recognized me and came up and said what's up, and introduced me to his girlfriend. I didn't know the guy all that well beyond him being the guy that sat behind me in my British Lit class, but I thought his girlfriend was pretty damn hot.

I didn't see her again for several months, but she's my wife now.

7 Seconds True Roots tour circa 2000 w/ Stretch Armstrong.

Agnostic Front in 97 or 98 was good too. Walked there from the dorms.

That'd be more like old Kings than the Brewery. Still a good idea.

BTW, Capital Comics is getting razed next. Building has been bought and must be cleared by the first. Dunno about PB's, but wouldn't be surprised if it's on the list.

That isn't the way I recall it at all. In fact, when we left she said you seemed really awkward and that you gave her the creeps. Strange how things work out.

Forever yours,

i think if we're being honest we can say metalcore is literally one of the worst musical genres of all time

this is not a very sad thing. I don't care if Ryan Adams played there in 1995.

If Ryan Adams played there any less than 20 times I'd be surprised.

Also, how did I not know that Van Alston co-wrote "Come Pick Me Up"?

I moved to Raleigh in 2003, quite some time after The Brewery's days—no Black Flag, no Bad Brains, no Superchunk or whatever the hell else put that place on the map. I've merely seen The Brewery go from bad hair and karate kicks to worse hair and karate kicks. Between 2003 and 2011, it has hosted fewer than a dozen bands I wouldn't walk out of the room to avoid. Bummer for the owners, I suppose."
