My aunt just called me with a question that I didn't know the answer to. Her step son (single parent) is moving to Raleigh in a few weeks having accepted a night (til 11pm) and weekend shift job. He has a 3yo daughter that he will need to put in childcare when he works. Anything like that exist in the area? Thanks!

could he just hire a nanny for that time? that seems easier but i don't know if that ends up costing more than a childcare program. i know there are like parents night out places but those are not as structured as probably what he is looking for. this is an interesting question that i haven't thought about before!but a nanny could be a good option.[Edited on July 22, 2011 at 4:31 PM. Interesting, I've never heard of such a place being available, except maybe for employees of hospitals. I would think a nanny or one of those international exchange au pair dealies would be the way to go.

https://www.care.com/ and http://www.sittercity.com may be good places to start looking.

Yeah I think his only options are either a nanny (which will be more expensive than a typical day care for one kid) or find someone who runs an in-home daycare that might be able to accomodate him.Try craigslist since a bunch of in-home daycares post on theresuch as something like this http://raleigh.craigslist.org/kid/2508016556.html[Edited on July 22, 2011 at 4:43 PM. I would think for the child though it would be better to find a babysitter sort of situation. It would suck to have to keep your toddler up until 11pm every day, or worse have to wake them up when you go to get them. I imagine that would make for a very cranky child on a regular basis

yeah, you want a nanny at those times, so the child can go to sleep in their own bed and not have to be woken up and getting their sleep schedule all wonky. consistency is the key to a happy well adjusted kid!

^^possibly. But if he is working 2nd shift job (gets off at 11) then he probably doesn't have to get up early so he could let the kid sleep in past the normal wake up time. This is assuming the kid doesn't wake up automatically at like 6:30 every day [Edited on July 22, 2011 at 4:50 PM. Reason : d]

I don't know, I think getting a kid on a 2nd or 3rd shift sleep schedule could cause a lot of behavioral problems down the line, especially once you then have to acclimate the kid to a pre-school or kindergarten situation.

Try the Division of Child Development (the folks that license daycares).http://www.ncchildcare.dhhs.state.nc.usHe might have to call someone there and ask...I didn't see anything right away on the website.I know on the actual license that daycares post, there is a section that says whether they are approved for 1st shift and or 2nd shift, so I'm assuming that some actually exist. (I don't know of any in Durham). Hopefully the DCD can point you in the right direction.Good luck!

I found my daycare (in home) in Durham off of Craigslist. She had her cert. and background check. I absolutely cannot imagine my life with out her. She really is a second mom. I interviewed several people off Craigslist and this is an option.I know one I found was a retired nurse and she would keep up to 3-4 kids pretty much 2 different shifts ( I am guessing what the parents needed) I know that one kid came at 2 am because his dad worked a split shift and she had a "kids sleeping room" set up consisting of a crib, toddler, and a twin bed. It honestly looked more like a walkin closet; however, she also had a play room.http://raleigh.craigslist.org/kid/2490883987.htmlHere is a posting I randomly found as an example. I would definitely check the person out, but I have been very successful.Childcare around the triangle varies greatly depending on where he will find a provider. Shop around as rates can vary from 500 (durham, clayton) to well over 1000/mon.
