Except that's a perfectly fine use of a comma to separate independent clauses, which is not even slightly the same as the use of a comma to separate the final dependent clause in a chain of dependent clauses. Both of you GTFO of here.

Jeff, Travis and Mike are going to the party. What? No, Travis and Mike aren't gay; they just come as a pair now.

I have my flaws. Sometimes I don't capitalize trademarked items in informal communication.

Sometimes.

"Why, in a world where "M I RITE?" constitutes a legitimate conversational volley, would anyone care about an Oxford comma? It's precisely because grammar -- don't even get me started on spelling -- has become so expendable that it's conversely become so precious. A friend tells of a text she got prior to a first date with a new man that read, "I'm looking forward to seeing you, too." As she puts it, "A comma before the 'too'? Nobody does that anymore. I saw that and thought, 'I'm in luuuuuuuv.'""

well you can stick an exclamation point behind this...IM LEAVING!

This makes no sense at all. I don't like it, no I do not. That comma plays an important role in correct interpretation.

Not to mention this could be construed as someone telling Jeff that Travis and Mike are going to a party.

The Oxford PR department actually does still allow its use in disambiguation; however, if the meaning would still be clear without the final serial comma, it shall be omitted in its press releases.

What kind of bottom-feeding degenerate doesn't employ the Oxford comma? Its omission seems awkward more often than not, and regardless, it plays an important role in disambiguation. There's a difference between elimination of superfluous text and compromising clarity by omitting something useful.

also, I used to surreptitiously correct marketing copy from clients that had neglected to use oxford commas

if you don't use oxford commas in your marketing copy, my respect for your company drops dramatically. it says to me "we don't take selling our product seriously enough to use proper grammar, so why should you buy it?"

i did not realize this was such a contentious issue

i always thought non-oxford comma made sense, but somewhere along the line somebody told me that wasn't correct and you know me i just follow the rules so...

well the thing about marketing people is that they generally think they fucking know everything

seriously the most annoying fucking people on the planet

don't try and tell me about some grammar when:

1. you don't fucking know shit about shit

and don't try to tell me how to "fix" a design when:

2. See #1.

"UPDATE: In response to the outrage, Oxford University reassured distraught grammar fans today that its comma drama had been greatly exaggerated. Maria Coyle of the university's press office stated that the edict to eschew the serial comma was only for press releases and internal communication, and furthermore "is not new, it's been online for several years already." The Oxford Dictionary's site has also added a new blog post Thursday, reasserting its tough, pro-comma stance. New Hart's Rules live. Long live Hart's Rules."

I was always taught to leave that comma out. Interesting. Now if I could get a certain co-worker to refrain from using commas haphazardly in the middle of nearly every sentence I would sleep better. God that baffles me.

why would they stop using this comma? is there a comma shortage causing them to ration their punctuation marks? i would gladly donate an extra comma or two if they really need it so that i can have more clarity in sentences with listed items.
