Im located on Ashe Ave and would prefer something close to downtown if possible because they sound bad and I dont want to ruin the rotors.

I just want to get the front brake pads replaced but I need them done tonight or Tomorrow before noon.

If they're to the point of sounding bad you're rotors are probably already toast. looks like rotors are about 30 bucks each from advance auto online, find a 40% off coupon, now they're 18 bucks each. 36 bucks plus pads is cheap insurance and shouldn't be much more work to make sure that you don't have to go back into your brakes anytime soon.

So the used car I got was from the north and the rotors are quite rusty (road salts etc). The area that contacts the pads are decent (pads are making contact) and it was re-certified so everything works great. I just don't like seeing the rusty rotors (mainly perimeters are rusty) during the day through the wheels.

What's the best approach to take? Take them off? Machine them down? Buy new ones? Easy to replace? Best place to get it done? I don't have the tools to do it myself. Easy to do on a 2008 GTI?

^any rotors you buy will get rusty.


And to replace rotors in most cases you only have to remove 4-8 bolts/screws. Just google your car model and rotor replace and you'll see.

Rust has little to nothing to do with the functionality of rotors; unless you get a lot of pulsation from those wheels when you hit the brakes, then there's no real reason to replace them, and you'd be doing it just for aesthetics...

I do brakes all the time, and can swap them for you if you want.

They aren't too hard to do, and my rates are fairly reasonable.

From what I understand more expensive rotors have the portions that don't come in contact with the brake pads coated to prevent rusting.

I realize this but the majority of the rust is where the pads don't touch and quite visible when you look at the wheels during the daylight. I just had some work done on the wheels and they look great until you see the rusty rotors behind them.

The $50 rotors the dealership uses probably aren't coated. I'd rather spend a little more and not have them rust.

Hard to see in the photo but you can tell the rotors are quite rusty even where the pads touch.



The exterior perimeter is where most of the rust is.

you can buy coated rotors. most places that machine rotors only machine the friction surface
not hard to replace if you have the right tools
i can do it at Apex Tuning (my shop)

I put these on my truck because I don't like rusty rotors. After 3+ years, they are holding up good.

Brand? How much? I need to do some research before I buy (obviously different for a GTI then a truck). I know I won't be happy with the stock ones the dealership carries. I know I should probably go ahead and replace the pads too if I replace the rotors but what about the calipers? As long as the're in good shape I'll be fine?

Anyone know of a good place in Charlotte to buy? Online?

The Centric rotors on tirerack.com come with their vented sections and hubs painted glossy black. That will probably work for you, and they're not expensive. People have told me the paint doesn't flake off. The paint came off the ones I have, but that was after a weekend at the track. So unless you plan on heating your rotors up to over 1000 degrees you should be okay.

zimmerman oe style rotors are coated and easy to find.. iirc the meyle brand rotors are coated also
