Just wondering if anyone has any experience with a similar issue and might know how I can fix it myself or who can fix it for me for cheap

Our fairly new (around 3 years old) HP laptop screen only turns on when the screen is opened at a certain angle. I can move the screen up and down and it will turn on and off as I move it. I'm sure its a loose connection, and I tried taking the bottom of the laptop apart to find the loose wire, but I kinda got stuck and didnt want to break anything since I am pretty clueless with the inner workings of the laptop.

sounds like a loose connector - but for a laptop you probably want someone that knows what they're doing look at it.

Otherwise I'd think it is the screen inverter, but those going out will result in just random cut offs.

any recommendations for who/where would be able to take a look at it? I dont wanna go to best buy or something generic and lose my computer for a week just to get charged a couple hundred dollars for a fix that only takes 15 minutes and a couple turns of a screwdriver

maybe after a few months someone else will bite who can help. I really dont want to take this to the Geek Squad and get charged out the ass for something thats probably not a super difficult fix

The key when opening a laptop is taking a good mental picture or an actual picture of the disassembly and taking note of where all the screws came from. Use a website like Ifixit to get a teardown manual of the model type and you should be able to see if the cable is loose. You will most likely need to unscrew all the bottom screws, remove the keyboard and upper casing and you should see the Monitor cable connection.

Also look for a local mom and pop pc tech repair shop, a simple diag which usually costs under a hundred dollars will determine if the cable is loose or the inverter needs to be replaced.

Lastly, until you get the gumption or the cash flow to fix it, hook it up to your tv or external monitor and have fun.
