This was mentioned in a thread a while back that I cant find.

Has anyone been there? Looking for some additional info on it but havent been able to find anything on the web that tells you specifically where it is at. I have found pics of the wreck, but no direction as far as exact location. Would also like to know best place to park and launch. Will be there this weekend with a kayak and wanted to check it out.

it's b/w oak island/long beach and Holden...closer to Holden the ocean side of the inlet

at low tide you can see it sticking out of the water.

so in the middle of the channel? I read there are three different wrecks out there.

I was going to launch for the OI side and walk out on the finger (seen in link below, near end of red triangle) and paddle out

yeah I don't know exactly where each is...never dove to see them...only rode a boat by one at low tide...plenty of folks on the beach on either island...not sure which is better though, sorry

Bad idea in a sit in kayak with no spray skirt, you will get swamped unless it is a bluebird day with no winds or waves.

Yeah thats probably a good idea. From the map it looks like at low tide land stretches out pretty far, so Im thinking the ship wreck is close by. The channel also has a fair bit of traffic so if I get swept out there is at least people close by

I live in CB and dive the Cape Fear area weekly. I can nearly guarantee you wont be able to see shit in that inlet. The water stays stained from the merger of 2 rivers dumping into the ocean and that inlet gets some terrible currents. There is a reason those ships sank where they did. Basically all the wrecks near that inlet have been reduced to rusty piles of sharp jagged metal.

NC has very few shore diving opportunities. The nearest wreck within paddling distance I can think of is the Liberty Ship about 2 miles out of Masonboro Inlet. It can get really clear there when conditions are right. Also, the Peterhoff blockade runner off the eastern beach of Bald Head Island.

^ yeah i dont really plan on diving. It was more just to paddle out there and check it out, and it doesnt look too far out when the tide is out like when this pic was taken.

Might bring a rod and try to catch some flounder out there. I have fished the inlet further back inland where the intercoastal meets the channel and you can catch some big flounder, I would think they would also be some near the shipwreck

Went out there on Saturday, ended up being a successful voyage. Water was a little rough since it was a channel, but was fine even without a spray skirt. Water was definitely too rough for diving or snorkeling. Would need an old wetsuit that you wouldn't care about being torn as the the ship is rusty and jagged, and the waves would toss you into it. You could see the smoke stack and another piece sticking out, and you could see alot of the structure that was about 1 ft from surface. All in all was worth checking out. Would be cool if someone had the time/equipment/conditions to dive it to map it out and take pics
