Has anyone here had dress shirt sleeves shortened? Can anyone recommend specific tailors around Raleigh who can do this well?

Even if your shirt is cuffed, it should be a pretty simple fix as long as it is well-fitting around the upper arm and shoulder. A tailor would just have to shorten the sleeve at the wrist and narrow it a little, so an otherwise reputable shop should handle it quite nicely.

if the shirt is not well fitting at the shoulder, you should probably reconsider what you've been buying and shop around/ get made to measure stuff as the alterations could get more expensive than it is worth.

These shirts fit me extremely well everywhere except sleeve length. I'm short - 5' 6", a fairly fit 180lb, wear a 42s jacket and a 32/33" waist. My typical dress shirt size is a 16.5/32. But I've had to wear 17" in the past.

With a little effort, I can usually find dress shirts that fit well enough since I can buy them by neck/sleeve. It's just a matter of finding a cut that works well. Shirts that fit me in the neck and shoulders are usually baggy in the mid-section (I wear slim/trim/athletic cut shirts and those are sometimes looser in the waist than I'd prefer). But once I find something that works, I buy several of the same shirt in different colors/patterns.

The real problem for me is shirts that are "S/M/L." -- I typically would need the sleeve length and waist/mid-section of a medium, and the neck/shoulder size of a Large, and sometimes the difference between a M and a XL depending on the shirt. And I have a few of these that are really nice, and fit prefectly except for the sleeve length.

I can usually get around the slightly longer sleeves by using the second cuff button to make sure the sleeve doesn't go beyond my wrist -- leaves a little extra material in the arms, but doesn't look nearly as silly as having my cuffs mid-way down my hands. But I have a couple of shirts that don't have 2 buttons on the cuff. And if I hold my arms straight down, the sleeve comes close to the end of my palm. But otherwise, these shirts fit very well. I could have another set of buttons added that would allow me to tighten the cuff. But I'd prefer to have the sleeves shortened (depending on cost) to get rid of the extra material.


V -- I've seen those, but I never heard of anyone using them. I may go get measured some place and then just give that a shot for the heck of it. Then at least I'll know if i have a better/easier option.

maybe next time you're in the market try out one of those hong kong tailors. send in your measurements, you can get 3 shirts for 40-50 each. I've got a friend that shops that way exclusively now. sometimes they travel and you can get measured in person. dunno if many hit raleigh but if you travel for business, might be something to look into. otherwise you can have someone else (preferably not stupid) measure you and send them on the internetz.

some of my shirts are ill fitting but only because the standard sleeve length for my neck size is too short. i have never heard of the opposite problem.

No shame in getting the clothes you buy tailored to fit your frame, I've gone as far as having shoulders reworked/shaved in blazers, which more or less constitutes damn near remaking the jacket.

Lee's tailor in triangle town is the business. They offer same-day service, they stand by their work, and their prices aren't outrageous.
