I bought a trailer and atv off craigslist last year and want to get the trailer legal so I went to dmv and they said I needed a bill of sale from previous owners. The trailer was bought by the guy from lowes, and he has no bill of sale for it.The only thing I have is the Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin with his name and lowes on it, i havent filled it out yet. I can also get a bill of sale easily for him, the only thing I am missing is the bill of sale between him and Lowes, which lowes said they cant help me with. Shouldnt lowes be able to just lookup the VIN number and produce a bill of sale?its the last piece I need unless there is some way to just bypass all that and do it a different way.just wondering what my options are

tell them it's homemade?profit.did this with a boat trailer a few years back (bought a boat with a trailer, but the trailer wasn't title/no VIN/etc.). I just went to the DMV, told them it was homemade, they gave me a form for SHP to fill out because it needed a road safety inspection (lights, tires, etc.). took that form back to the DMV and got it titled/registered. I think the only thing is, is that you don't want it to have a VIN.... [Edited on May 1, 2011 at 7:26 PM. Reason : .]

yeah i guess i would have to look it over to see if it does and if they are removeable easily, but I mean you can look at it and tell its one of the trailers you can buy at lowes lol

why the fuck do people still buy/sell shit without a bill of saaleWasn't a raptor 660 was it

The bill of sale dmv says I need is from lowes to the previous owner since it was never registered/tagged. I can get one from the previous owner for our transaction no problem.

You have the MCO with the first owners name on it. I would think that would be enough. Try a different Patty or Selma.

yeah, it's SOP for me to call 3 different DMVs in 3 different counties whenever i have questions. usually get at least 2 different answers.

The BOS for the original sale is the sales receipt. Lowe's should be able to reproduce that if he paid with a credit/debit card. Besides, he would have had to show it to get plates in the first place (I bought a Lowe's trailer a couple months ago), so unless he just has bad memory or the DMV screwed up and never asked, he's full of crap.
5/2/2011 2:29:22 PM
Pssst...most people don't bother with plates on a small trailer, including the original owner in this case. Can't say I recommend it, but I've never been pulled for towing stuff without tags.

yeah the original owner never got tags, and Lowes said they cant produce a bill of sale without the CC number which was his girlfriends or finace or something which he cant get. Would it be possible to just cross his name out from the MCO and put mine, print up a bill of sale, and have lowes sign it and motorize it. then tell dmv when they see the crossed out name and address that it was just an error at the store or something.

the question was answered multiple times in threads i have provided links togrind off the VIN and go through the "homemade" process.

Grind the vin off, or remove the tag, tell them it is home made, get the form, take it to SHP and it ill be great. I did this with one I bought.

In the unlikely event that you do get pulled, you can always just say you're borrowing it from a friend in SC or something. They don't have BS trailer registrations down there.

just tell them it's homemade.
