Just realized there wasn't one.

Did anyone believe they ever had credibility to begin with?

GOP blinked, CNN reporting potential deal, one week CR will be passed and no riders on deal....or at least the two riders that were the issue.

can Planned Parenthood not make it on its own? If people think it is so fucking important, why don't they give their OWN money to it directly, instead of forcing other people to do so via the gov't. Fuck those people

People created the government to give money to it. It makes no sense for every person to give their money to the hundreds or more things they care about individually. So a LONG time ago, people decided it’d make more sense to have a governing body handle maintenance of certain things in society, one of which is making sure poor or uneducated people have access to parenthood counseling. From this desire, Planned Parenthood was born (no put intended).

Now, the republicans are painting planned parenthood as an abortion monster that just cranks out abortions all day, so that they can attack it and garner support for their base. And it appears aaronburro is gullible enough to succumb to this strategy.

so, basically, people don't want to support it with their own money. got it

Funniest part of the whole thing is the law the republicans state they want already exists. They say they don't want tax payers funding abortions but there is already a law that specifically prohibits that.

Republicans just want to get rid of planned parenthood so they cannot do abortions even without taxpayer funding.

I don’t know how you got that from that… but whether you understand it or not doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme of things I guess.

^^ you do realize that every dollar the gov't gives to PP is another dollar PP doesn't have to come up with in order to murder babies, right? It doesn't matter which magical pot I put the money into, it's all still funding the whole organization.

^ again, if people think it is important, then they should be able to raise the money on their own. Seems that passing the money through an inefficient middleman like the gov't is the worst way to accomplish their goal.

With that logic, funding wouldn't be going to most organizations.

^^ where are you getting your argument from? Repeating a clumsy, obviously uninformed statement “rawr people should give their OWN money for it RAWR” just paints the image in my mind of a stereotypical poor, uneducated conservative voter.

PP gets ~70% of their funding from non-government sources already. Of their overall budget, more that 98% of it is spent on non-abortion related health counseling and medical services.

So clearly people do and are giving their own money to it.

And on top of this, you don’t see it as important for young or poor people about to embark on parenthood to have a good, accessible resource to turn to? Is this not something a government should support?

True...we want to teach kids "first of all about values and morals. But if they make a mistake, I don't want them punished with a baby."

Well I would say your values and morals can be summed up with that statement alone, Mr. President.

But we digress.

ummm, reality?

Sounds like the extra 30% should be no problem, then. Let them compete on their own merits.

I'm sure it is a nice thing to have. Why don't you write a check right now and support it directly.

According to Planned Parenthood, they (not another organization, but PP) performed 332,278 abortions in 2009.

http://www.plannedparenthood.org/files/PPFA/PP_Services.pdf

That's 332,278 of these:

We need to set up a countdown clock for reaching the debt ceiling....maybe a default coutdown clock? GOP saying more cuts will be needed to raise it.....I guess they want to play a game of chicken, again.....

Also, interesting, there were not 218 GOP votes for the CR, dems helped pass it.

The federal government already is prohibited from funding abortions through the Hyde Amendment, so I'm not sure what the Republicans are up in arms about. I guess they just don't like condoms and family planning services.

This is stupid logic. I doubt you'd have such a cavalier approach to showing the mangled remains of armed service men and women, or the charred bodies of executed serial killers. You support war and execution, right? If the conversation shifts to gay marriage (as it always does with republicans after abortion) are you gonna google search dudes having sex in order to prove your point?

so what do we say about the lack of a man's right to choose? btw, it's not "compulsory maternity." A woman always has the right to use other forms of birth control. Or, she can just shut her damn legs. Only a liberal would say that a person is "forced to do something" when they willingly make a fucking choice that leads to a certain possible consequence.

Awww look. This little guy here thinks that this money goes in a magical pot that is magically separate from all of the other money PP has.

First of all, you are a condescending jackass and one of those aborted fetuses should have been you.

Now that that's out of the way, financial accounting is actually what keeps the money separate, and it's very real. The only thing magical in this thread is your judging sky daddy.

yes. because there really is a magical pot there. And every dollar that they get from the government is one less dollar they have to raise via other sources. Again, there is no real separation.

yes. and with a click of the "Post Reply" button, you also ignore the fact that every federal dollar they get from the gov't is one less dollar they have to raise elsewhere. Thus the notion of magical pots.

I don't really see what's so hard to grasp about aaronburro's statement on PP finances.

If I give you $5 but tell you not to spend it on food, then you'll take $5 of your own money to spend on food and replace your empty wallet with that $5.

It's not a hard concept for me to understand, but the fact that such things are standard practice for nearly every organization with a budget and rules about how they spend money (e.g. pretty much all businesses, the US government, etc.) does seem difficult for others to grasp. Organizations have been successfully separating abortion-related funds since 1976.

This whole thing ignores the fact that abortions are a very small part of what Planned Parenthood does. Medical services, consuling, education, and contraceptives provided by Planned Parenthood probably does more to reduce the number of abortions in this country than removing funding or banning all aborptions ever could. Pretending abortion doesn't exist isn't going to make it so.

Just like our drug policies, we get so wrappped up in demonizing and punishing those involved that the underlying issues and problems that put people in the position of choosing/not choosing an abortion remain completely unaddressed. In the end, nobody gets what they want and nobody gets what they need.

(except politicians who can continue to exploit the issue for political gain)

what part of "if I give you 5 bux and tell you not to spend it on food and you then take 5 bux from your wallet and go to McD's and put that 5 i gave you in your wallet" doesn't make sense to you? it's a fucking shell-game. if it goes to that company, it goes to everything that company does. period. end of story.
