I am getting frustrated with RD, and I cannot figure out what is going on.-I have a router, but I have opened port 3389 (and verified it on multiple websites).-I have enabled port forwarding on the router to go to my computer (using the Virtial Server settings)-I have created a dynamic DNS account ******.dlinkddns.com-I have enabled RDC on the computer (I can connect to it using my local network address)When I try to connect using the public ip address or the DNS account I have made, however, RDC says that I cannot connect to the computer.Any suggestions about what is wrong/what I can do to try and troubleshoot the problem?I am have Win7 and WinXP, and I have the same problems when trying to connect to/from each computer. Thanks in advance!

Any particular reason you want to use Remote Desktop?easy fix = logmein.com

That is an easy fix, but I would prefer to be able to use RDC. And it just confuses me even more when logmein.com works and RD does not. That makes me think that there is an issue with the computers, but I do not know what the issue would be with both of the computers.

are you using the home edition on either machine?Win7 only allows remote access on pro or better.

I would HIGHLY advise against opening remote desktop over the internet this way.If you want remote desktop from anywhere, go download Windows Live Essentials and turn on Sync. It'll let you remote desktop from any computer anywhere.Doing what you're doing through punching a hole in your router is even worse than putting your machine into the DMZ. It's going to allow anyone who gets your IP unlimited access to brute force your machine. And they will, quickly. This is a bad, bad bad idea.If you want to use RDP specifically for the new Win7 functionality, then you need to be setting up a VPN tunnel first and using that to connect to your local network.

Do I not have to do port forwarding for a VPN if I am trying to get to a computer behind a router? I am still having problems connecting to the computer too...Is there anything I need to do to allow a VPN connection to be made to my WinXP computer?I have allowed incoming VPN connections to the computer already.[Edited on April 8, 2011 at 12:42 AM. I do not have Win7 pro, but it is hacked to allow RDP (I know it works).I can get RDP to work from within the network, but I cannot get VPN to work, even after setting my computer up to receive connections.

I would at the very least change the RDP port to some random number in the high thousands.Make sure Windows firewall isn't blocking it as well. It's a POS.[Edited on April 8, 2011 at 11:17 AM. Reason : *]

hamachi.cc on both end points

^that or just use logmein. It's free and easy and takes zero configuration. I only use RD if it's on the same network as it's faster.
