A few years ago a cousin a few times removed completed the most research done on my dad's family, several offshoots and back splits, from all over the country.

Ends in Wake County in 1700s. Somewhere out in Zebulon. So my next step is to go tramping and see if I can find any graves, as well as fill in 2 missing names we have that are from here. A side bit is one researcher that assisted said cousin thinks the line continues to VA, but isnt proven due to records destruction in the Civil War.

Anyone know of any old cemeteries around Zebulon or Little River? Ive marked a few, namly the Bunn Family Cemetary, and the Chamblee cemetary (both offshoots of my family at a point) but they are too recent and pretty well documented.

Also, has anyone done or looked into doing DNA typing for genealogy research?
Lastly feel free to share your tales of family history. Im sure some of the

Na, weve got like I said a few people we dont have full names for, only some guessed dates and a first name. Id also just like to see where they are buried at, hope to figure out where they lived a little as well.

ancestry.com is a really great resource. you have to be picky about which results you take, & double check everything. some people have a lot of errors in their trees. i have 772 people in my tree so far. this has taken years (maybe 5+) of research & some assistance from my great uncle who did a lot of genealogy research also.

my dad & i have have done dna testing through 23andme.com. they focus a little more on the health side than family, but there's a significant amount of family stuff too. i now know that my maternal line comes from sweden (way way wayyyyyyy back hundreds/thousands of years) when we thought it was northern france/southern england (which is where my dad's paternal & maternal lines come from).

^ Been there done that. This is where the research stops as documents have been lost. Hense looking for gravestones. Also someone in my fam did the DNA and Im pretty trusting of the tree as is via paper.

familysearch.org is a great, free resource.

there are also several LDS Family History Centers throughout the area, there is one in Raleigh on Six forks road, and another one in Apex. Both are free, and have trained staff that can help out, whether or not your just starting family history, or pretty in depth like you are.

if anybody is interested, for today only 23andme.com has a special. $0 for the kit, same $15 for shipping, and $9/month for a year subscription to their update service. when i bought my kit at xmas it was $99 & $10/month. when dad bought his a couple of years ago it was $450, no subscription. pretty good deal if you were wanting to do something like this. i just bought my husband one.

^ yeah, but the price was supposed to follow a Moore's Law curve. They got down to the $200 neighborhood and haven't come down any further than that even with the best deals I've seen from them.

my post was from 2011. i have no idea what a moore's law curve is. i don't know what they're currently charging for 23andme either. $9/month for 12 months = $108, plus $15 shipping = $123. that's less than $200.

I believe your calculation is $123 + $99 = $222.

I know, I bought the same thing (some significant time ago, it was the same package as yours). They dropped the price of some services down to $99, but they only did so by offering tiered services. The user base basically universally agreed that this was a horrible idea because it was basically genetic testing... without genetic testing. It just didn't make any sense.

The price of base pair of genetic sequencing was supposed to drop like the price per transistor in computers.

i just checked on my subscription status & it says it's still active, but i'm being charged $0 for an indefinite contract. hmm. i'll take it!
