I'm in a distance ed GIS course at NCSU, and I'm having a lot of trouble with finding data online and getting projections to work out. I'm also not sure how to load .lyr formats, as well as a few others. If you can meet me tomorrow (Sunday) before 3 to help me for an hour or two, I'll pay you ($20?) I can raise it if we end up spending more time. I live near NCSU, so we could meet on campus or at one of the Cup-A-Joes. I asked my professor for help, but I don't know if I'll hear back from him anytime soon, and I need to get the project (at least mostly) finished tomorrow.[Edited on February 26, 2011 at 3:28 PM. Reason : (I know this should be in Study Hall, but no one looks there)]

GIS data is available for download via the US Census TIGER website, and the NCSU library GIS webpage. Shapefiles are what you will be dealing with primarily. Keep all your files in one directory and don't move them around.

^ that, and make sure that ArcGIS is set to relative and not absolute data paths...drives me nuts

^^ I haven't messed around much with TIGER, and the NCSU page isn't turning up what I want. I need a map of the 48 states with outlined states, probably. However, the NCSU GIS page is giving me data I don't know how to use. I also need to overlay some data from NOAA, so I need help getting the projections right. I've done this stuff before, but I'm just rusty.

^ thanks for the help! That's close to what I need, but it is lacking state outlines. I may still be able to use it, though.[Edited on February 27, 2011 at 10:22 AM. Reason : could you link me to the source page? they might have other maps I need... ]

http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/cgi-bin/proxy.pl?server=gisdata.lib.ncsu.eduThat will give you a ton of stuff.Esridata > disk1 > usa > states.shpEach of those "disks" comprise a different set of layers that should be of use to you (cities, census designated places, roads, rivers, etc.)Be sure to download all the associated files to the same directory (ex. states.shp, states.shx, states.dbf, etc.)

Do any of the computers in DH Hill have ArcMap on them? Really don't feel like going to Jordan.
