???This obviously applies mostly to those of you who aren't native North Carolinians. Just curious.

2/2/2011 2:30:46 PM
I guess technically Junior year in high school or something, when I heard some people talking in math class "man, NC State just got to the Sweet 16"I didn't really follow NC State sports until after I was in school here
2/2/2011 2:32:02 PM
ST gets very boring with pretty much the same few threads at the top.
2/2/2011 2:32:20 PM
I see Jaybee has outsourced his efforts to his buddies
2/2/2011 2:32:49 PM
For me, it was probably the '91 NCAA tourney that refered to NC State's Fire & Ice duo. Until then, I never even heard of the university known as NC State.
2/2/2011 2:34:00 PM
Yeah, I don't have a problem with this topic -- Maybe it's worded strangely. Better choice was "when/why did you become a State fan" for out of staters.Mine was in 1999 when I got accepted to State. I remember watching the last State/Duke game in Reynolds on TV in a restaurant in New York City. It was the first time I remember rooting for them..
2/2/2011 2:36:22 PM
Interesting question. I would say late 90s probably, or whenever it was that they upset FSU 2 out of 3 years
2/2/2011 2:37:36 PM
I think it was either Junior or Senior year when I told my favorite chemistry teacher that I was going to go to NC State and she just gave me a look and was all "you poor thing".I was pretty confused at the time, and didn't realize until later what that blue tar heel license plate on her wall meant
2/2/2011 2:37:41 PM
Way to completely misinterpret the question. I'm sure this skill set served you well in job interviews.
When i was in kindergarten and my family was following the cardiac pack to the NC. I still have hats, pennants, and soda cans. somebody stole my '83 clock at a party at my house in college.
2/2/2011 2:40:21 PM
Damn, that sucks...ever find out who took it?

2/2/2011 2:42:10 PM
This is a legit question. IDK if you realize, but NC State is not all that well known anywhere besides the Carolinas. One of the best ways for a University to get it's name out there is through it's athletics and State didn't have a whole lot going on in that department after Jimmy V.
2/2/2011 2:45:33 PM
Your claims are based on someone who pays little to no attention to college athletics. I've lived on the East Coast all my life, and nearly every male I know could tell you that Oregon State, Ball State, Boise State and East Buttfuck State field teams. In the internet era, the geographical gap means little.

I think we can all agree that P.Riv and Willy Wright put the program on the map^^ yeah, never got that much either, pretty much everyone knows the Tar Heels. I mean, occasionally I will get a "NC? is that North Carolina?" as in the State, but once they know that they realize its different from the Tar Heels[Edited on February 2, 2011 at 2:57 PM. State fans' "little man complex" when it comes to media bias is staggering. Most of the media could care less about State besides one or two UNC homers that like to kick the ant hill.

i grew up in a family of tarhole fans who never mentioned NC State anything...that i remember atleast. it was always conversations about unc and dook. first state game i think i ever watched on my own was a bball game when scooter and marcus melvin were here. i don't remember if that was before or after i had started looking at applying to state or not
2/2/2011 2:59:13 PM

Always been a State fan...dad and his 3 brothers all graduated from State so I was born into it. One of the first games I remember watching was when CC Harrison went off at the Dean Dome and State beat UNC by 14. 1998 maybe? I would have been 6 or 7 then. But I'm not from out of state...so this doesn't even apply to me.
2/2/2011 3:23:45 PM
Yeah, if you grew up a State fan, it's impossible to really answer this question. It's like asking Jaybee when he became aware of the $10 buffet at Golden Coral -- it's something you're born into.

i can tell you when i realized what nc state sports was.i was at a hornets game w/ my dad and asked him when the hornets were going to play nc state, since i, of course, wanted to go see state play.he then explained to me that it was a stupid question.

[story]I'm in the Navy at a training command in upstate NY. I have a NROTC application out, as well as a few applications for schools in FL (where I'm from), CA, and others.Christmas Eve of '97, my girlfriend (to whom I was planning to propose on the 26th) decides she doesn't want to see me anymore. She is scheduled to attend NROTC at University of Florida the next summer. I decide that there is NO WAY I'm going to go to UF to be near her, so I check out the local Command Career Counselor's office and see some brochures for colleges that have Nuclear Engineering.Hmm...NC State...interesting...Raleigh..."Where is Raleigh?" (yeah...no clue)So I contact the Dept of N.E. and ask about scholarships for room and board."Sure!"After a full year getting my Scholarship and dealing with some medical issues, I leave NY and head to Raleigh (by this time I found out where it was).I get to school around the 10th of December, 1998. As I pull into campus to try and find the NROTC offices (in Reynolds), I notice a ton of tents lined up on the sides of the road."What? Are there really homeless people living on Campus? What have I gotten into?" (no joke...this is what I thought). It wasn't until a week later that I asked someone about it and they told me it was Camp-Out (you youngun's don't remember that, do you?) for basketball tickets."People camp out for college basketball tickets?"[/story]

The first state game i can remember is 1989 nc state vs maryland when we were the #1 seed in the ACC tournament and lost to Maryland in the first round who was like 1-13...The kindergarten teacher wheeled in a tv so she could watch the tournmanet during school.WE LOST BY FUCKING THIRTY BY THE WAYI should have fucking read the writing on the wallLuckily, I was a Duke fan then and got to see us play in Greensboro in the NCAA tournament. Quinn Snyder, Phil Henderson, Robert Brickey, Danny Ferry, Alaa Abdelnaby.... Laettner... Clay Palmer (?).... now that was real basketball. Suck it Jeff Lebo and King Rice.[Edited on February 2, 2011 at 6:23 PM. Reason : a]
