First I want to thank all of you lovely TWWers who have been sending your well-wishes my way due to the current turmoil in Egypt. My family there is doing just fine and up until yesterday have stayed out of the streets.

Getting in touch with them has been near impossible to due the government shutting down the internet and mobile towers, etc. Landline has also not been going through but today it was the way to go and we were finally able to make contact with them.

Protesters are still in the streets and people are actually out there in tents. From what I've seen on Al-Jazeera it looks like the NCSU-UNC bball ticket campout but with lots of yelling. Many, many people are taking advantage of the chaos and are robbing stores and residences armed with guns and knives. To deal with this, people on residential streets (including my tuff family) are taking shifts to protect their streets and buildings. My uncles and male cousins are on the streets with knives ready to attack anyone who threatens them. My aunts and female cousins are in the kitchen and watching over the men on their balconies, armed with boiling water and oil and glass bottles just in case anyone threatens their men! It's all very exciting but very scary. My friend's 78-year-old grandfather is even out on his street armed with his cane and a baseball bat.

I'm not sure if many of you are keeping up with this as closely as I am, but if you have, you are probably aware of the thievery that has occurred at the museum in Cairo. It is so sad that it had to come to that and I hope they find a way to recover all of the important artifacts. People were so crazy this weekend that they wanted to go start fires near the pyramids in Giza.

If I know Egyptians, I know they won't shut up until Mubarak steps down. Anyway, for now I'll leave you guys with this SNL skit.. enjoy!

Lol@ the Time Warner Cable joke

Oh man! I posted this for you in the other thread.

I just keep thinking about you and your family, girl! Keep us posted. This can be the OFFICIAL egyeyes update thread.

Also, I was sad to hear about the looting going on at the Cairo museums. Some of the mummies have been destroyed. So sad.

It is extremely sad. Those people obviously didn't realize that that's what brings tourists in! Shame on them for ruining something so irreplaceable.

egyeyes,

I've been watching with great interest and concern since all of this began. I'm glad your family are well and doing their part to maintain order. I can't swear that mine would be doing the same in a similar situation.

I wish your family there well. I wish Egyptians in general well. As much as this whole process has been academically interesting, far better that it be over with a good government in charge and no more violence, looting, or vandalism in the meantime.

I actually did try to send a telegram but it had so much anti-government language in it that it was stopped before it could even get to my family!

I knew this already! I was finally able to contact my family yesterday, though. I hope his family is doing well and that he gets in touch with them soon.

Tell your friends and family to be safe, egyeyes. That place is either going to have violent crackdowns or the government will fall and a power vacuum will ensue.

It was not really civil unrest but one time Time Warner an outage that effected the whole area around Kaplan for pretty much a whole day, there was a lot of people outside looking frustrated, dissatisfied, and restless.

When it came back on everyone disappeared indoors and all was well.
