So...got a speeding ticket in the great state of Virginia. 44 mph in a 25 mph zone. Apparently in Virginia, if the speed limit is unposted in a residential area, it is 25 mph (35 mph in NC).Anyone know what the repercussion of this could be for a NC driver?

I'm pretty sure the unposted speed limit for residential areas in North Carolina is 25.Actually, I'm not so sure on the state law. It might be based on the particular town you're in.[Edited on January 24, 2011 at 10:11 PM. Reason : ]

It can still cause insurance points on your dl. Get a va lawyer.
1/24/2011 10:13:23 PM
BEND OVER
1/24/2011 10:56:59 PM
Good luck. VA traffic mafia is run by total assholes
1/24/2011 11:01:46 PM
i think we have a good debate going on herei think we should raise the speed limit in residential areas to 55 mph and not 25 mph

^^

I HATE VIRGINIA WITH PASSION! It is by far the most NAZI state in entire US. They recently increased their speeding fees to something like $1000 for VA residents. Never seen anything like it. You are doomed.
1/24/2011 11:39:17 PM
lawyer from va sends you a letter. you call them and tell them a credit/debit card number. ticket never happened.
1/24/2011 11:40:48 PM
don't forget the law against radar detectors
1/24/2011 11:44:42 PM
I'm terrified to speed in Virginia.
1/24/2011 11:53:26 PM
They actually have state FELONY charges for pretty routine speeding tickets (like 15-20 over or something).I would not live in VA. I wouldn't take a job there, or move there for any other reason under any circumstances. Their speeding laws alone are a dealbreaker.[Edited on January 25, 2011 at 12:33 AM. Reason : ^^^ yeah that's the way most tickets work]
1/25/2011 12:33:13 AM
I don't know how true this is, but some of my friends in VA were telling me it's not even safe to do 5MPH over in a lot of places. They acted surprised when I got on the highway and set the cruise for 9MPH over.
1/25/2011 12:34:30 AM
I fucking hate Virginia as well.My only two car accidents )and they were not my fault) happened in VA.My bf's only accident and speeding ticket happened in VA.And VA likes to fuck you in the ass. However, their 5% sales tax helps if you live on the state line with TN where it's at 9.5%But good luck. Bend over, that'll probably be easiest.
1/25/2011 12:47:41 AM
^^^ Except in VA, they don't deal nearly as easily if at all. They just fuck you.Worst "conservative' state ever
1/25/2011 2:02:50 AM
yeah, I got a ticket in va, got a lawyer letter, gave them some money, and the ticket went away. Better to spend some money now than a shitton over the next few years in insurance increases.
1/25/2011 6:46:35 AM
^ Agreed
1/25/2011 9:47:09 AM
Yeah it looks like hiring a lawyer is probably my best option.
1/25/2011 10:00:41 AM
I got a ticket in Carroll Co., VA about 6 or 7 years ago for 9 over (74 in a 65 zone). Not only did I end up losing $100, but the cop was so irritating ("The Lord made a nice day", "God bless you", and "God watch over you as you get home" all worked into a maybe 5-minute conversation). I mean, damn, son, how much God you got?
1/25/2011 10:53:35 AM
Last ticket I got, the first thing the cop said when he got to the window was "Hey there speed racer!" I took it like a man, he was gentile.
1/25/2011 11:03:45 AM
all the tickets i have ever received in my life came out of virginia. Such a terrible state. Just pay the fine and promise yourself never to go back there.
1/25/2011 11:11:03 AM
The cop did you a favor making it 19 over. 20 over is reckless driving.
1/25/2011 11:13:10 AM
I drive like a scared bitch through VA
1/25/2011 11:26:35 AM
1/25/2011 11:48:18 AM
its been a long time since i got a ticket in VA, but at the time since VA is a Common Wealth State they do not share drive violation information with other states of insurance companies. I just paid my ticket and it never reflected on my insurance.
1/25/2011 12:46:08 PM
VA is still a commonwealth. All states that are part of the Driver License Compact will share information on traffic violations that occur in their state. Sometimes there are slip ups, but I don't think they're as common as they were in years back.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Driver_License_Compact
1/25/2011 1:00:58 PM
hahahahaI had a post reply window open a while ago from which I planned to make a pedantic comment about VA being a commonwealth, but decided against it.
1/25/2011 1:10:46 PM
they cant get much right up there, apparently they are against throwing black fetuses on the highway
1/25/2011 1:41:15 PM
1/25/2011 1:42:08 PM
because in Raleigh he'd be safe doing 9 over anywhere and it's 35 unless otherwise posted in my fine City of Oaks 'fuck VA they have HELICOPTERS to catch you speeding, what a crock of shit.
1/25/2011 2:08:16 PM
1/25/2011 2:24:57 PM
Virginia can tongue kiss my shithole.
1/25/2011 2:42:49 PM
^^^ Thanks....yeah I was right off of the interstate, really didn't even know it was considered "residential". Also, the actual "law" I broke regards UNPOSTED speed limit, meaning there may not have even been a sign. I will NOT, however, be driving back up to that terrible place just to find out. And while we are on the topic...25? I have to stay on the brake to go 25. Unless its a school zone, I vote that we just get rid of speed limits under 35.
1/25/2011 4:06:07 PM
That reminds me, does NCSU's Dan Allen Drive still have that random ass speed limit sign? Something like 6 or 14 MPH.
1/25/2011 6:02:38 PM
Virginia can lick my shitter. That whole state sucks.
1/25/2011 6:27:17 PM
1/25/2011 6:33:00 PM
VA also made it a felony to go more than 80 mph, and it's automatically $1,000I remember when they first implemented the law, there was a ridiculous amount of cops that had pulled people... I think we counted 18 in about 2 hours
1/25/2011 6:41:40 PM
yikes
1/25/2011 6:42:51 PM
^you've never done 75 in a 55? happens all the time[Edited on January 25, 2011 at 6:49 PM. Reason : ]
1/25/2011 6:49:04 PM
I was wondering how long it would take for TWW to begin lambasting me over this. I'm actually pleasantly surprised...I feel like we had some quality discussion and laughs about VA before the Negative Nancies attempted to take over the thread!
1/25/2011 7:20:12 PM
What I think is interesting is how differently speed is looked upon from state to state. While there is the Nazi regime in VA in NY (At least on Long Island) the state troopers will let you go up to 73 in a 55 on the highways there.
1/25/2011 8:13:45 PM
I have never been pulled in Virginia but the way I drive, I'd be fucked if I did. That being said, I agree with others and say that virginia can kiss my ass.
1/26/2011 1:31:31 AM
no i dont do 75 in a 55at most ill go 65 if im not alone on the road and i stay around 60 when I am solo, but i am also willing to take on the risk of being pulled over and prepared to accept responsibilityi dont go more than 10 over anywhere[Edited on January 26, 2011 at 11:24 AM. Reason : d]
1/26/2011 11:24:38 AM
i've lived in VA almost 3 years and it is not that bad, you guys are being a bunch of whiney bitches.but don't ever go 20+mph over in this state or you're fucked because that's reckless in VA actually i got pulled over for 26 over in a 40mph zone recently, and just told the guy i was running late to an appointment and he gave me 'failure to obey highway sign' instead of speeding + reckless.if you want to know a state that REALLY sucks, check out maryland. 25mph zones everywhere, with ticket cameras at a shit ton of intersections and roads, they even have photo-enforced 65mph beltway sections, that blew my mind. now THATS a deal breaker.
1/26/2011 12:29:23 PM
that's probably b/c people there drive like they're trying to escape an alien invasion--or at least that's been my impression
1/26/2011 12:31:40 PM
my impression with cops anywhere, is this:if he comes up to the window pissed, just say alot of yes sir, and you get a warningif he comes up being all nice, you're about to get a ticket
1/26/2011 12:43:23 PM
unless he's pissed and the first thing he says is "get out of the vehicle." then you're about to have two shiny bracelets and a free trip downtown
1/26/2011 12:50:39 PM
well, i have never done anything dumb enough to merit that happening
1/26/2011 12:55:24 PM
Got a ticket a few days before Christmas in VA. (Where I live.)Cop said he had me by laser doing 85 in a 70. He said anything above 80 was reckless driving. When he came back to the car he gave me a ticket for 80."So is it a smooth ride?" he asked, in reference to my new car (2011 Mustang GT)."Yes officer. I really don't speed that much but it sure is fun accelerating up to 80... er, I mean 70."$135 to a lawyer. Should be settled in March (lawyer had it delayed for a scheduling conflict).
1/26/2011 5:21:35 PM
I've been in VA 2.5 years and it doesn't seem to be that big of a deal - I speed all the time, but so does everybody else here in the Metro region, so that probably helpsmy one ticket came on I95 in Emporia, which is apparently a pretty notorious speed trap
