it says it supports eyefinity. is this one of the models where to enable 3 displays, one of them has to be connected via displayport? if I could run 3 displays from dvi, dvi, and hdmi I would buy

Nope, this one does require DisplayPort for eyefinity. No idea why, that kind of sucks. I've owned the card for maybe 10 months, never overclocked (for longer than a few minutes).
