Let the #1 pick debate begin
12/27/2010 4:57:38 PM
what's the debate?about whether he stays in school or declares for the draft?
12/27/2010 5:12:00 PM
I've seen people mentioning the possibility of trading down and gathering a couple first rounders for #1 overall. Not that I agree with that, I just assume that not everyone will think taking Luck is that black and white.
12/27/2010 5:25:35 PM
let's make a baseless assumption that Luck stays in school and the Panthers keep the #1 pickwho do you take?Newton?Mallett?Locker?and if not a QB, then what position

^^kidnap jim harbaugh and hold him hostage until luck declares
12/27/2010 5:36:03 PM
harbaugh is going to the 49ersbut you said kidnap so ok]
12/27/2010 5:36:56 PM
Luck sounds completely retarded when he talks... reminds me of Stanley Spudowski
12/27/2010 5:39:22 PM
January 15th is the deadline for college players declaring for the draftIlluminating details will be revealed by that time^If Luck sounds retarded when he talks, how would you describe how Mallet sounds when he talks?]
hopefully when Luck beats VT, Michele Tafoya asks him what's he gonna do next and he's like "IM GOIN TO CAROWINDS!"
12/27/2010 5:44:14 PM
Interesting...he looked great everytime I watched him on TV or in person
12/29/2010 11:25:21 AM
Luck or bust. Do anything to make it happen, Panthers executives.
12/29/2010 11:27:19 AM
Yeah, if not Luck (if he stays in school that is), the Panthers should trade the pick. There really isn't anyone else this year worth the money that the #1 pick in the draft demands.[Edited on December 29, 2010 at 11:30 AM. Reason : :]
12/29/2010 11:30:37 AM
^^^ I'm wondering if Todd McShay wrote that because it sounds like a bunch of malarkey.
12/29/2010 11:32:25 AM
^
12/29/2010 11:40:27 AM
You have to think if the Panthers don't think anyone is worth the money for a top draft choice what makes you think anyone else does as well. I personally don't even believe Luck is worth that top pick and feel even if he is available the Panthers should look to trade down. The only difference being they might actually find some takers.
12/29/2010 11:43:46 AM
Everyone I've read is saying Luck is the best QB prospect to come out since Peyton Manning. He's definitely worth the number 1 pick if he comes out.
12/29/2010 11:49:07 AM
In that case I would draft Nick Fairley and hope the new CBA includes some kind of NBA-esque rookie pay scale.[Edited on December 29, 2010 at 11:52 AM. Reason : if Luck doesn't come out]
12/29/2010 11:50:04 AM
Some of you are acting like Luck is just another good QB. I've only seen a few of his games, but the people who write about football for a living think he is a can't miss guy.
12/29/2010 11:51:49 AM
cant wait for the BCS games to get more of a look at Luck (haven't seen a Stanford game in I-dont-know-how-long) and Mallett (was distracted by the clowns in front of us at the SC game to focus on Mallett's game)
12/29/2010 11:56:02 AM
I watch several of his games this season, and he looks amazing. Sucks to be Jimmy Clausen....except that Ivan Maisel is saying it sounds like Luck will go back for his junior/senior year. Maisel is a Stanford grad though, so take it for what it's worth. If Michigan fires RichRod, we're probably in good shape to get Luck, but it's not like the kid's family needs money or anything. He doesn't have any pressure to leave early.
12/29/2010 12:02:25 PM
12/29/2010 12:19:28 PM
he's saying harbaugh will go to michigan
12/29/2010 12:23:11 PM
he is assuming Harbaugh would go to Michigan and Luck would enter the draft as opposed to playing for a new coach at Stanfordand even though it seems like every year there is a "best qb prospect in a decade", the praise for Luck does seem to be ridiculously highI bet it's that tackle that put him over the top
12/29/2010 12:24:24 PM
what else can you see in that crystal ball of yours?
12/29/2010 12:29:38 PM
Luck should learn from other QB's that went back to school after being a sure top pick.Look what happened to Leinart and Locker (Locker obviously hasn't been drafted yet but he was pretty much a lock for a top 3 pick last year). Also if the Panthers take Luck we can refer to our QB's as "Luck and the Irish"[Edited on December 29, 2010 at 12:59 PM. Think our biggest need is WR outside of QB and while I think AJ Green is a solid top 10 WR, no way I'd take them with the #1 overall pick. So I think we either get Luck, trade down, or potentially take Bowers(DE/Clemson) to help with our pass rush to go with Charles Johnson(really had a good second half of the season).
12/29/2010 2:03:08 PM
it used to be almost impossible to trade out of the 1st pick w/o getting raped...but that may change if there's a wage scale by next draft
12/29/2010 2:27:05 PM
If you would draft Rivers or Eli Manning with a 1st pick, then drafting Luck is a no brainer. His evaluations are better than either of those guys coming out of college. He is a franchise QB, and as a team without one, the panthers have to pick him.WR is the second biggest need?? I don't think so. I think the guys the panthers have are good -- they just have had shitty QBs. Bad quarterbacking will kill WR production. How about pass rusher as the second biggest need?[Edited on December 29, 2010 at 7:11 PM. Reason : .]
12/29/2010 7:08:32 PM
I'd say WR, because I really think we cut ties with Steve Smith before next season so we'll need a new #1 WR. I like what I saw out of LaFells and Gettis, but add in Green and we have a young WR crew with potential. Not a big fan of Steve Smith for a young QB, he's a "diva" at WR.Charles Johnson really came on strong the second half of the season, and if Everett Brown ever lives up to potential then we could get a decent pass-rush going. And like I said, I don't think we draft a WR, I think it's Luck or Bowers but if we stick with Clausen I'd like us to cut ties with Steve Smith via trade and pick up Green.

sacrifice jimmy clausen to the football gods and beg repentance for such a terrible pickseriously, i would have been happier with tebow. And this is before I saw him take any pro snaps
12/31/2010 6:15:10 PM
tebow went in round 1clausen in round 2would you also have been happier with Bradford?
12/31/2010 6:17:11 PM
i would have been happier with peyton manning.
12/31/2010 6:29:59 PM
I don't think the panthers are smart enough to not waste their # 1 pick. Jerry richardson would give up a potential franchise qb for bubble gum, a BJ from jake delhomme, and for lunch with the BOA CEO at the skyscraper downtown.
12/31/2010 9:11:23 PM
I've got a bad feeling about this draft, if luck doesn't come out there are really no other qbs worth picking number one and we'd have to take that clemson guy who is talented but would probably go 5-10 in drafts of other years, plus I think we need a DT more than a DE, oh well at least we won't get stuck with some reggie bush or david carr
12/31/2010 9:41:33 PM
Take Luck or trade the pick IMO
12/31/2010 11:26:12 PM
Trent Dilfer just said Luck was the best prospect he had seen since Elway
12/31/2010 11:41:15 PM
alright good, the giants might be out of the playoffs today, they'll prob get rid of coughlin and maybe we can pick him up if he's not too old
1/2/2011 6:32:31 PM
Coughlin? Pass.Probably mentioned somewhere, but the Panthers are supposedly interviewing Ron Rivera, Chargers D coordinator, for head coach. He was also the coordinator of the Bears when they went to the superbowl. Not the most thrilling news, but we could definitely do worse.
1/2/2011 8:24:50 PM
Maximum LULZ if Delhomme helps Fox get a jerb in Cleveland
1/2/2011 8:27:32 PM
is this the offseason the panthers finally get rid of the worst GM in football?
1/2/2011 8:33:53 PM
^^^ Rivera is the man. He took a bunch of nobodies in San Diego and turned them into one of the best defenses in the NFL this year. There is not a single pro-bowler, past or present, on that Chargers defensive roster, but they finished #1 in the NFL in terms of fewest yards given up this season. He is a fiery guy, but not erratic like Singletary, and would make for a very good head coach. Much better than some shitty re-tread like Jim Fassel.Rivera may also simply be a Rooney-rule candidate. We shall see.[Edited on January 2, 2011 at 8:38 PM. Reason : 2]
