What? The studio version is not only not a rarity, I'd say it's a good bit more commonly heard than the live version(s), at least on any radio station I've ever listened to.

"I Want You to Want Me" by Cheap TrickThe studio version isn't a "rarity," but the live version is more well-known and usually the one on classic rock radio rotations. Does that count?[Edited on December 27, 2010 at 3:01 PM. Reason : .]

^^yeah, we'll count that. I don't know if I've ever heard the studio version on the radio. You'll heard the studio version of Surrender sometimes, but I Want You To Want Me is pretty much always the Budokan version.[Edited on December 27, 2010 at 3:06 PM. Reason : ^^][Edited on December 27, 2010 at 3:07 PM. Reason : although I agree, the studio version isn't a "rarity" to the extent of the 2 that I listed]

I would say Lake of Fire and The Man Who Sold the World, but I don't think there even are studio recordings of those by Nirvana.

^ Good call. Does a studio version of that song even exist (by Seger, I mean)?^^ No, there aren't--they're both covers. The former is by the Meat Puppets (and there is a studio version, which is no more rare than anything else by them, save maybe Backwater.) The latter is by David Bowie. The Bowie version was a hit for him--the title track of one of his albums (which I have a copy of on vinyl, incidentally).[Edited on December 27, 2010 at 3:44 PM. Reason : ]

12/27/2010 7:01:34 PM
12/27/2010 7:21:07 PM
which songs off that album got frequent radio play?

KICK OUT THE JAMS, MOTHERFUCKER BROTHERS AND SISTERSFWIW, the Kick Out the Jams LP peaked at #30, and "Kick Out the Jams" hit #82 on the Hot 100...not exactly obscure. In the spirit of the thread, though, I enjoy the live-in-studio version of the song from Thunder Express much more than the more famous version. ]
